Legend Research event brings more than 100 Pokémon species to the Tokyo Station area.

Within the Pokémon games and anime, Pokémon Trainers who are looking for the most powerful species of Pocket Monsters need to venture to remote locations far outside human settlements. However, right now in the real world there are over 100 Pokémon, including more than a dozen Legendary Pokémon, waiting to be found in downtown Tokyo.

The Pokémon Legend Research event kicked off this week in the Nihonbashi and Yaesu neighborhoods, located just east of Tokyo Station. For the next two and a half months, visitors to the Coredo Muromachi, Tokyo Midtown Yaesu, and Nihonbashi Mitsui Tower shopping and restaurant complexes will be able to spot artwork displays of more than 100 different types of Pokémon.

While some of those are two-dimensional illustrations, there will also be 19 Pokémon statues, representing the original-generation starter trio’s final evolved forms, Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise, plus several Legendary Pokémon such as Lunala, Solgaleo, and Groudon, Xerneas, Zacian, Zamazenta, and, Ho-oh.

In addition to looking awesome, the statues are also part of a mystery game that fans can play, as each one features a hidden code that can be used in conjunction with your phone to solve a multi-stage puzzle. There’s no mention on the event’s website of a prize, but it seems like there must be some sort of reward for those who manage to complete it, since participating in the game requires a 3,300-yen (US$21) ticket which can be purchased online.

There’s no charge at all to see the statues, though, as they’re all situated in publicly accessible parts of the three entertainment complexes. Skipping the mystery-solving game will also allow you to instead spend that money on some of the new merch on offer at the Pokémon Legend Research popup shop inside Tokyo Midtown Yaesu, such as folding fans, tote bags, mugs, and key chains.

Pokémon Legend Research in Nihonbashi and Yaesu will be going on between now and November 29, and should you need a refresher on what the featured Pokémons’ names are, there’s a song that’ll teach you what each and every species is called.
