Wilson Department of English, University of Ottawa ENG 3375 -- Contemporary Literary Theory Week 10 An introduction to the thought of Leo Strauss. The lecture begins with a discussion of how Strauss’s point of departure is profoundly shaped by the existential analytic of Dasein undertaken by Martin Heidegger. Under the influence of Heidegger, Strauss felt genuine political philosophy needed to eschew scientific and theoretical categories that can screen us from the political phenomena as they genuinely arise. In order to recover an ability to take a “natural” standpoint to political phenomena, Strauss urges a return to classical political philosophy and its concern with the Good as the ultimate ends of political life. This “natural” standpoint has been obscured by the modern break from the classical tradition. The “Three Waves of Modernity” are discussed in the lecture. The lecture then outlines Strauss’s discovery of Esotericism, in particular emphasizing how this discovery enables a genuine return to the thought of the classical tradition and acts as an argument against the main tenets of historicism. The lecture ends with a summary of the commonalities and distinctions between Heidegger’s “Destruktion” of the concealed tradition and Strauss’s “Esoteric” reading of the tradition.
