Neon has released the first trailer for the Lily James-starring crime thriller, Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo.

In this film, our bad lieutenant is a corrupt gambler in the Metropolitan Police Force who finds himself thrown into a tangled case after a mysterious FBI agent arrives in Tokyo to investigate the disappearance of a politician’s daughter. All whilst this is going on, a killer in the yakuza underworld is keeping a close eye on them.

The film is directed by the prolific Japanese filmmaker Takashi Miike, best known for his controversial and violent films such as Audition, Ichi the Killer, and 13 Assassins. The film stars Shun Oguri, Lily James, Shotaro Mamiya, and WWE wrestler Liv Morgan, whose real name is Gionna Daddio. The film was penned by Daisuke Tengan, who has previously written a number of Miike’s other films, including Audition and 13 Assassins.

The film is the third instalment in the Bad Lieutenant series. The original film, just titled Bad Lieutenant, was released in 1992 and directed by American auteur Abel Ferrara. He is also known for hits such as King of New York, Ms .45 and The Addiction. In this original instalment, Harvey Keitel plays a corrupt New York City police detective with terrible drug and gambling addictions.

Then, in 2009, German director Werner Herzog gave us Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call – New Orleans. This time, led by Nicolas Cage, the film follows him as a police sergeant who injures his back during an act of heroism in Hurricane Katrina; this leads to him becoming addicted to pain medication before things spiral out of control as he gets involved with a drug dealer who is suspected of murdering an immigrant family.
