Live: South Africa vs Australia — first Test in Durban
Fri 9 Oct 2026 at 9:50pmFri 9 Oct 2026 at 9:50pm
34th over - Anrich Nortje returns to the attack
He's coming around the wicket to Alex Carey after Wiaan Mulder's success in his last over.
Carey punches a full one hard down the ground and Temba Bavuma dives to get a hand to it. It's a testament to how well struck it was that it still almost made it to the boundary.

33rd over - Jansen to Renshaw
Renshaw is hit and the ball loops up to Kyle Verreynne. The South Africans are asking the question, but the umpire isn't sure there's glove in it.
He says no. And South Africa reviews.
It looks like this has come off his armguard.
No, I thought there was a rule that if there's no gap between the glove and armguard then it counted as part of the glove, but I guess that's not the rule anymore. Although, maybe there's a tiny gap there.
Also, great bouncer by Jansen. Completely caught Renshaw by surprise.
Jansen settles back into a good line and length outside off, and Renshaw is leaving again. Jansen is right in this fight now.

32nd over - Mulder to Carey
After hours of coming over the wicket and swinging down the line of the stumps to left-handers, Wiaan Mulder comes around the wicket to change the angle to Alex Carey.
Inches! Inches in it as Alex Carey slashes outside off and inside edges between himself and the stumps. There's not a lot of room there, so that must have been very close.
Beaten! A rattled Carey tries to change the line by shuffling down but is once again beaten on the inside edge.
"Why'd he have to dance down? They've got all day. They can be as patient as they want," Shaun Pollock says in commentary on Fox.

31st over - Renshaw vs Jansen
Well worked off the hip by Renshaw and well run to get through for two runs.
He's leaving well here. Again, the middle order is where Renshaw has found his home in the Queensland line-up, so he may feel a little more comfortable here.
Fri 9 Oct 2026 at 9:31pmFri 9 Oct 2026 at 9:31pm
30th over - Wiaan Mulder is back for more
A very tight leave by Matt Renshaw to start. Mulder has been swinging it back into the lefties all day, so Renshaw must be very certain to be leaving that close to off stump.
It's another leg bye for the Aussies as Renshaw gets across to try and clip to leg. But it's off the pads again. We will surely be approaching record leg bye levels if this innings carries on like this.
Fri 9 Oct 2026 at 9:27pmFri 9 Oct 2026 at 9:27pm
29th over - Marco Jansen continues
Four. Down leg and that's another one just helped on its way for a boundary. Way too easy for Alex Carey.
But Jansen tightens up for the rest of the over.
That's been the experience so far with Jansen. Mostly good, with the occasional wayward delivery.

28th over - Matt Renshaw is back batting in South Africa
Eight years after getting recalled to the Test team in South Africa in rank circumstances, Matt Renshaw is batting in a Test in South Africa again.
And he gets an absolute gift to get off the mark as Wiaan Mulder sends a ball way down leg and Renshaw just helps it on its way for two.
And then another full one just dabbed to the leg side for a single.
Mulder is still hunting the stumps with the in-swinger to the lefties, but Alex Carey is good enough to drop his bat down in time.
Fri 9 Oct 2026 at 9:20pmFri 9 Oct 2026 at 9:20pm
27th over - Alex Carey into the fray
And straight away there's a big LBW shout as Marco Jansen spears in at the stumps. But it's going down leg side. So neither the umpire nor the Proteas are all that interested.
Carey survives, but good grief are the Aussies up against it now.

Steve Smith is out in the first over after lunch!!
(Getty)Australia has lost Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith in the space of four balls about 45 minutes apart, as Smith plays back and edges a length ball away to third slip.
After getting smacked on the finger, Smith was playing a long way back there to a ball that really wasn't all that short.
Smith is out for 25 off 53 and, as Alex Carey jogs out to the middle, South Africa has two brand new batters on 0 off 0 to bowl at.

27th over - Matt Renshaw, his moustache and shiny helmet are out in the middle
Steve Smith is facing the first ball after lunch from Marco Jansen.
Ouch! Second ball after the break rears up at Smith and drills Smith's right index finger, squishing it between the ball and the bat handle.

A win for Australia
I know this is the men's test blog, but the Aussie women are all class back in brissy!

The blokes are battling in Durban, but in Brisbane the women have done it easy in their ODI against Bangladesh.
Annabel Sutherland was player of the match with 4-30 and an unbeaten 25 off 23 as Australia coasted to a seven-wicket win, chasing down Bangladesh's 166 in just over half their allotted overs (25.4).
Phoebe Litchfield top-scored in the run chase with 77 off 57, before Sutherland and Ellyse Perry (26 off 45) finished it off.

LUNCH: Australia 3-84 (Smith 25*)
Well, it doesn't get much more painful than that for Australia. After doing all that work to rebuild from 2-24, Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne's partnership ends on the stroke of lunch.
It would have been a decent session for Australia had Labuschagne made it through, but in the end the Proteas will be grinning in the sheds as they chow down while Marnus looks for a hole to crawl into.

OUT! Marnus Labuschagne falls on the last ball before lunch!!
(AP)Mulder sneaks one past the inside edge and smashes into the front pad. It looks incredibly out, but Labuschagne is taking a review with him after a conversation with Steve Smith.
Oh, he was SO CLOSE to getting outside the line of off stump, but the umpire's call does him in (so Australia won't lose the review) and he has to go for 37.

26th over - Wiaan Mulder will take us to the break
There's a leg gully for Labuschagne. Can Mulder get a ball up into his armpit?
Labuschagne has struggled when he really shuts up shop, so he can't focus too much on just getting to lunch here. Keep playing cricket.
He's getting through. One to come.
Fri 9 Oct 2026 at 8:27pmFri 9 Oct 2026 at 8:27pm
25th over - Maharaj keeps spinning them
An edgy single from Labuschagne, and a more assured drive to mid-off to get off strike.
Wide and cut hard to the man on the rope by Labuschagne.
And Smith knocks another one to long-off. They're calming down before lunch.
One more to mid-on by Marnus. Can Smith complete the set with a sixth single?
Nope. A rank wide one is theatrically left alone instead.

Standing up
Feeling for the young generation of keepers who must try and emulate Carey and Verreynne by standing up to the stumps when the fast bowler is on. Tough act to follow
- Mike
Emulate who? Sarah Taylor would like a word.

24th over - Wiaan Mulder continues as lunch looms
We're inside 10 minutes to go until lunch as Marnus Labuschagne leaves the first Wiaan Mulder ball outside off.
Labuschagne is wandering a long way across and clipping down fine for a single. That was a long walk for a man low on form. We've seen him get bowled around his legs doing that before.

23rd over - Maharaj again
A lovely scoop to fine leg by Smith. Pre-meditated but well played to manipulate the gaps in the field.
Smith clatters one through the off side in a manner that must be terrifying for the silly mid-off. But the deep cover saves a boundary.
Labuschagne gets a single of his own to the same man.

22nd over - Wiaan Mulder is back
It was a good opening spell for the all-rounder, who got Travis Head and should've had Nic Maddinson.
Both are gone now, so what can he do against the right-handers?
Again Smith is stepping forward and across, then leaving and almost being hit on the pads. It's an awkward look that has brought him undone a few times in the past.
Kyle Verreynne is up to the stumps, so Smith will have to hang in his crease now.
He's falling a long way over towards the off side. If Mulder can find some in-swing or seam into the pads, LBW is in play.
Really well played by Smith to get back and dink a single behind square leg to end the over and bring up the 50-run partnership with Marnus off 72 balls.
