The deals we are still watching out for
Now that Blakey deal is done, what are the remaining trades that are on the table going into the final two days of this trade period? It's easy to get lost in this haha.
- David
(Getty Images)A little over 32 hours to until the window shuts, by my count. Here are the deals we are still watching for now Blakey has been done:
- Lachie Whitfield to Carlton. It's gone a bit quiet, but the Blues are still working.
- Keidean Coleman to Essendon. Kiddy wants to be a Bomber in the last hours of the trade period.
- Zane Duursma to Melbourne. The Dees have pick 33 now, and intend to use it.
- Nick Murray to North Melbourne. The Crows want picks this year, North are offering futures. A tricky one.
- Pick five to someone. Port Adelaide are shopping around pick five and it sounds like it'll go before the deadline. Tigers the favourites.
- Jack Viney to West Coast. No idea what's going on here. Radio silence for a week and a half.
- Trent Rivers to West Coast. As above. Is a package being worked on? Are both going west? Neither? Nobody knows yet.
- Josh Goater to Hawthorn. North need picks now, what can the Hawks offer them?
- Jayden Short to Collingwood. The Pies aren't confident anything will happen here. But there's still time.
- Luke Pedlar to Port Adelaide. The Power have been a bit preoccupied, but this should happen now.
- Will McLachlan to Melbourne. Requested a move to the Dees, may well happen late on.
- Flynn Riley to Collingwood. Pies are still working on it, should get done.

Can the Bulldogs match a bid on El Souki?
Morning Dean, just wondering what your take is on the dogs current draft hand with El Souki in mind. With their current picks, what would be the earliest pick they could match a bid on, and how plausible is it that they use their plethora of future picks to trade back into this years draft?
- O.M
I'll grab this one for Deano if that's OK!
I think it's going to be pretty much impossible for the Bulldogs to match a bid on Khaled El Souki.
He's projected to go around pick 20 and the Bulldogs' best pick is pick 55 in this year's draft.
They shouldn't be able to land Zak Butters and grab their top academy prospect in the same summer. This is the system working.

Who is the winner in the Blakey deal?
Any thoughts on an early winner here? North are banking on Blakey accelerating which I think still needs systematic improvement. Sydney, while hamstrung, have backed themselves to turn one elite player into multiple contributors. The risk for North is sacrificing future flexibility before they’re genuinely competitive. The risk for Sydney is that you can’t always draft a replacement for proven quality. But who do we think has come out on top early?
- Jess Mia
If we're looking for an early winner, surely it has to be North.
Until the events of late August, there was no way that the Kangaroos would have been able to get anywhere near a player of Nick Blakey's calibre.
Not only have they got him, they've gotten him for what I'd say is about 65 cents on the dollar.
If not for the investigation hanging over his head, I'd say Blakey is a player that the Swans could have commanded three first-rounders for, given his standing in the game, and his five-year contract.
I think North is ready to win, they think they're ready to win as well, that's why Alastair Clarkson was punted.
Blakey is a genuine needle-mover.
On the Swans side of things, they'll back their system as they always do, and it would not shock me if someone unexpected steps up and has a breakout year next year.
The pick 6 they get in this deal is a very good pick and they're going to grab a potential future star there.

What's the right price for Coleman?
Surely pick 17 is way too high for Coleman considering he hasn't played much footy over the past three years. Is there any word that Kiddy is undergoing a medical at the Bombers? Hopefully Essendon start with pick 27 as the first offer, and only give up 21, if we get one of Brissy's 3rd round picks in return. As this is the last draft before Tassie comes in, I'd rather the Bombers load up of draft potential than take a great player who might not be fit to play consistently (we just got rid of one of those to Geelong!)
- Alex
This will be a fascinating negotiation.
Brisbane has voiced that it would need a top-20 pick for Kiddy Coleman, who is under contract for one more year.
I reckon the Lions will ask for 17, arguing that it'll be pretty much 20 when bids come in for Dougie Cochrane, Cody Walker, Ethan Matthews and Caylen Murray.
The Bombers will look to get it done with either pick 21 or 27, and ultimately they'll meet somewhere in the middle.
I wonder whether the deal eventually ends up being 17 for Coleman and Brisbane's pick 42 (the Neale compensation pick) which would allow Essendon to match a bid for their NGA product Blake Justice.
Everyone wins in that scenario.

Hello everyone!
Nick Blakey eh?
I reckon these list managers must want tomorrow off, because at this rate there are going to be no more deals to talk about.
What a massive move in the history of North Melbourne Football Club!
Let's get stuck into it all shall we?

A Collingwood update on Houston, De Goey, Short
(Getty Images)Justin Leppitsch was up on trade radio at the precise time the Blakey deal went down, so we're a little late getting back to this one. Leppa gave a run-down on all things Collingwood, and did some mythbusting around the Pies' "shopping" of Dan Houston:
We spend half our life refuting claims and things that are made up. I'm the list guy, I assume I'd be the one doing it. And I've never had one conversation about Dan through this trade period or before.
Any bites for Jordan De Goey?
No. Not as yet, with a day and a half to go. The way we've approached Jordan probably gives you the answer to Dan. We've been so honest with Jordan, why would we be not upfront with Dan? We're not playing games.
Leppitsch also says the Pies are interested in Jayden Short but a deal is currently "unlikely". He was a little coy as to the reasons why that one isn't progressing. They're also still looking at a Flynn Riley deal.

North Melbourne's big Nick Blakey move
Hi Dean. Are North throwing too much at Nick Blakey? Are they better served actually focussing on their need for a key back in Nick Murray and going after a Kiddy Coleman or Dan Houston who would be a lot cheaper? Thanks for all your updates!
- AchyBlakey
(Getty Images)I think this is one of the most significant moves North Melbourne have made this century. And it comes at the end of a month in which the club has been aggressive, decisive and a little bit ruthless as it pursues meaningful progression.
Thoughts on Clarko's depature notwithstanding, Jaymie Graham is a fantastic appointment to lead the club's new era. I don't think they could have got a better man for the job.
They have been assertive in chasing Nick Murray from Adelaide, and may yet still be rewarded on that front.
And now with Nick Blakey, an opportunity that presented late and probably unexpectedly, the Kangaroos have been prepared to put it all on the line and chase the big fish, the real difference-maker, with an offer that none of their rivals could match.
Blakey's off-field situation is significant and can't be discounted. But should he be able to continue his career without interruption, he immediately elevates North Melbourne. He is a fantastic footballer, surely the best and most damaging rebounding half-back in the game. He fills a position of need for North and will add top-line experience to a young group.
It's a high price, but it's a price worth paying for North Melbourne. They should now have realistic eyes on not only the top 10, but even an unlikely challenge for the top six.

Nick Blakey deal is DONE! North Melbourne and Sydney strike a deal
(Getty Images)There we go! A little after 10am AEDT on the penultimate day of trade period, we've got a Nick Blakey to North Melbourne deal done.
Here is the breakdown of the deal, as per AFL.com.au's Cal Twomey:
- North give to Sydney: Picks 6, 47, 2027 F2, 2028 F1, 2028 F2
- Sydney give to North: Nick Blakey, pick 52, 2028 F2
It's a big, big price for North Melbourne to pay but I think it's worth it. They've emptied the clip here over a number of years - but still have left just enough left over to potentially get Nick Murray in too.
We might be witnessing the rebirth of North Melbourne here. Graham, Blakey and maybe Murray. It's a massive step forward.

Luke Pedlar still likely to switch teams in SA?
Any updates on the Pedlar trade? Any chance port can just walk him to the PSD?
- Sean
I imagine this will go through by the deadline, probably for a throwaway late pick. The last word we got on this was from Jarryd Roughead at Adelaide, who basically just said Port Adelaide had bigger fish to fry and they'd get to Pedlar once the rest of the jobs were done.
Port are still auctioning off pick five currently, but aside from that the runway should now be clear for a Pedlar deal to be struck.

A sad farewell for Kiddy Coleman
Kiddy! Nooooooo! Kiddy is a fan favourite, and we'd hate to see him go, but the sad fact is he hasn't hit the heights of the 2023 GF with injury taking its toll and finding it hard to get a sustained run in the team. He needs playing time to show his class again. He's a real smart pick up for a Bombers team looking to build. Pick 21 helps with Murray, any extras adds some polish. Pick 17 just feels over the odds, but what would I know? Pies picked up a 2 x Brownlow and 3 x GF winner for pick 39...
- Rob
(Getty Images)Not just that grand final too Rob, as I'm sure you don't need me to remind you. For the entire month of September 2023, there weren't many better players in the AFL than Keidean Coleman. It looked like he was ready to blow the league apart before the injuries kicked in.
We've all be robbed of watching him play. From a neutral perspective, hopefully he can get his body right and play another 150 games with the Bombers.
And as you mentioned there, if it helps get Caylen Murray to the Lions it's a deal worth doing. Murray himself will be likely be the Zorko/Coleman successor off that Brisbane half-back line in a couple of years.

North Melbourne makes another Nick Murray offer
(Getty Images)The Roos are still having a crack at both of their major targets. Having lodged a new Nick Blakey offer yesterday, now a new offer has arrived for Nick Murray.
AFL.com.au's Cal Twomey says North Melbourne has offered Adelaide a 2027 first-round pick plus pick 33 (the Zane Duursma pick) for Murray.
Adelaide has been asking for a top-20 pick in this year's draft. It remains to be seen if this offer is enough to tempt them.
A reminder that North offered Sydney pick six, the 2028 first-round pick and possibly a 2027 second-rounder for Blakey. Both details are still up in the air.

Zane Duursma's manager is providing an update
(Getty Images)Dave Trotter is on Trade Radio speaking about his client Zane Duursma, who is still hoping to get to Melbourne in the next 48 hours.
You never say it's a lock, but he's out of contract so I'd be reasonably confident something gets done. Melbourne have pick 33 on the table. You'd hope North can take the pick and do what they need to with it.
I am hoping it's today and not tomorrow night.
Trotter went into some interesting detail about Zane too, and how it might have taken a little longer than others for him to get his head around the requirements of an AFL footballer. Even used his brother Willem, who Trotter says has had none of those problems, as a direct counter-example.
Trotter says Zane is pursuing this move, which will represent a pay cut, to take himself out of his comfort zone and try to kickstart his career.

A Laitham Vandermeer update
(Getty Images)Not 20 minutes after I mentioned Laitham Vandermeer's desire to get to Essendon, SEN's Sam Edmund says Laitham has changed his mind.
Edmund says Vandermeer had strongly considered a move to the Bombers, but has now decided to stay at the Dogs and will fight for his spot in the team.
And fair enough too, who would want to leave the Bulldogs right now?

A quiet trade period for the Dockers
Any movement expected over in the west with Freo in the next 48 hours?
- Scott
Not expecting anything from Freo between now and close. They'll take pick 19 to the draft and have some good options around that mark, and will back themselves to be 1% better in 2027. Because that's all it will take.
A little bit of semi-Freo related news that has just come in though. Josh Gabelich from AFL.com.au says Sam Switkowski, freshly retired, is going to follow Jaymie Graham from Fremantle to North Melbourne to sign on as a development coach at the Kangaroos.

Work (almost) done for the Western Bulldogs
Dogs doing anything more? I saw Vandermere may be up to be traded away, and they’ll need some picks in to try to match for El Souki?
- Sam
(Getty Images)That's about right Sam. Laitham Vandermeer is still looking to move, most likely to Essendon. Not sure if the Kiddy Coleman chase impacts this one at all, but I would doubt it.
And yes, the Dogs would love to get some points in the bag to potentially match a bid for Khaled El Souki on draft night. There's a bit of variance in rankings of El Souki, so it's tough for the Dogs to know exactly what they would need to have prepared, but they'll do their best.
I imagine Bulldogs fans can hardly wait for season 2027.

Keidean Coleman requests trade to Essendon
(Getty Images)The other big bit of news that came after the blog closed last night was around Keidean Coleman, who has been canvassing his options over the past couple of weeks.
He has now made a decision, and Coleman has told the Lions he wants to be traded to the Bombers.
Dons fans, how does that one get done? Pick 21 and a bit of extra sprinkled on top? Surely not pick 17?
Less than 48 hours for a deal to be struck on that one.

Nick Blakey moves closer to North Melbourne
(Getty Images)After a day of little to no movement on the Nick Blakey front, an update came in last night that suggested this deal was not too far from being completed.
Both Tom Morris and Cal Twomey reported that North Melbourne had upped its offer to Sydney. It now consists of pick six this year, a 2028 first-round selection and potentially a 2027 second-round pick.
Would that be enough to get it over the line? Sounds like it's not far away, and Twomey even believes that it could be completed today. Once again, watch this space.
