Live: South Africa vs Australia — first Test in Durban

Sun 11 Oct 2026 at 9:16pmSun 11 Oct 2026 at 9:16pm

Can someone stand up for the hosts?

Don’t forget..,SA are about par with where Aus were at this point of their innings…could we see a Renshaw-esque knock from one of the SA batters?

- Avi

It does feel like the innings are charting an eerily similar course at the moment.

However, Aussie bowlers have been a whole lot more disciplined and consistent than their South African counterparts.

I just don't see Australia's big four giving up as many loose balls as the South Africans did to Renshaw and the Australian tail.

We shall see.

A look at that Marnus non-catch

Lunch: South Africa 4-115 (Stubbs 14*, Mulder 7*)

(Getty Images)

So, that lengthy review ensures we don't sneak another over in before lunch.

If that wicket had stood, South Africa would have gone to lunch with serious issues.

But it didn't — and instead, the hosts go to lunch with slightly less serious issues.

They end the first session of day two still 275 behind Australia, with their top four batters back in the sheds.

Nathan Lyon was brilliant in that session, picking up just the one wicket but looking dangerous with just about every ball he bowled, while Mitch Starc opened the day with venom and Pat Cummins produced an excellent spell in the middle of the session.

Steve Smith made two brilliant catches to dismiss David Bedingham and Temba Bavuma, making the Australian the most prolific catcher in the history of the game.

Sun 11 Oct 2026 at 8:43pmSun 11 Oct 2026 at 8:43pm

Mulder gets a life!

Another perfect Nathan Lyon delivery has Mulder pushing outside off.

He can only produce a thick edge and Marnus Labuschagne takes a very good low catch at slip.

BUT!

Did that carry?

The umpires aren't sure and they send it upstairs.

No, it didn't.

The technology shows the ball was clearly touching the turf as Labuschagne was stooping to take the catch.

Mulder was already half-way to the pavilion, but he's granted a life.

Sun 11 Oct 2026 at 8:42pmSun 11 Oct 2026 at 8:42pm

38th over - Lyon goes again

Fresh from those heroics on the boundary rope, it's Nathan Lyon beginning his 11th over of the innings.

Stubbs works a single off the first.

Sun 11 Oct 2026 at 8:38pmSun 11 Oct 2026 at 8:38pm

37th over - Hazlewood continues his spell

Two slips and a gully in place as Hazlewood pitches one up to Mulder, procuring a hint of movement in towards the right-hander.

Mulder is picking out midwicket on the bounce and it's a dot ball.

Another straight one has Mulder defending with a mixture of bat and pad. He's then nudging back towards Hazlewood.

Hazlewood pulls his length back and Mulder is back and defending.

Mulder is back and pulling Hazlewood crisply forward of square. It looks destined for the rope but Nathan Lyon, running a full pelt, executes an inch-perfect dive and makes a clean one-handed save. The batters run two.

Sun 11 Oct 2026 at 8:36pmSun 11 Oct 2026 at 8:36pm

36th over - Lyon continuing to rpobe

Lyon produces three dots to begin the over

Another shout! This time, Mulder isn't offering a shot and the ball cannons into his front pad. Probably not spinning enough and bouncing too much. The umpire agrees and Australia don't review it.

Sun 11 Oct 2026 at 8:31pmSun 11 Oct 2026 at 8:31pm

35th over - Hazlewood enters the attack

Josh Hazlewood is thrown the ball with the Aussies detecting a whiff of blood in the water.

Three dots to begin for Hazlewood, who begins his spell about as accurately as you would expect.

And we've just seen a replay of that Lyon LBW shout from the previous over. The ball was bouncing miles over and spinning far too much. Shows what I know...

Mulder is shouldering arms and that's the end of a maiden over from Hazlewood.

Sun 11 Oct 2026 at 8:27pmSun 11 Oct 2026 at 8:27pm

34th over - Massive LBW shout

Mulder and Stubbs begin the over positively, working three singles from as many balls to start the over.

There's a slip, leg slip and short leg in place for both batters.

Lyon switches to come around the wicket.

BIG SHOUT! Stubbs is beaten all ends up and he's struck on the back leg! This looks very close!

The umpire says not out — and after a lengthy consultation, the Australians opt against a review.

Oh gosh, it looked very good to me.

Perhaps spinning too much?

Sun 11 Oct 2026 at 8:23pmSun 11 Oct 2026 at 8:23pm

33rd over - Cummins continues his spell

Back of a length from Cummins and Stubbs is standing up and shovelling his pull shot out to deep backward square for a single.

Slightly too straight from Cummins and Mulder flicks away a single to get off the mark.

Creamed! That's a beauty from Stubbs, who takes a full stride forward and plays the most classical of cover drives. Four runs.

Sun 11 Oct 2026 at 8:20pmSun 11 Oct 2026 at 8:20pm

32nd over - Lyon continues

Lyon has been so, so consistent thus far this morning, and he's continuing his examination of Stubbs.

Three dots to begin.

Stubbs is then pushing into the infield and setting off for a run that was never there — he thinks better of his and is back in his crease in a flash.

Sun 11 Oct 2026 at 8:14pmSun 11 Oct 2026 at 8:14pm

31st over cont. - Cummins with five to come

The new batter is Wiaan Mulder.

He's an allrounder — but an allrounder with a Test triple century to his name.

A wild one to begin, short and down the leg side.

Big LBW shout! Mulder is forward and his front pad is smashed! Cummins loves it.

The umpire doesn't.

Too high? Outside the line? Maybe both.

The Aussies don't send it upstairs.

Sun 11 Oct 2026 at 8:11pmSun 11 Oct 2026 at 8:11pm

Out! Another special catch from Smith!

(Getty Images)

Wow.

Another brilliant catch from Steve Smith!

Bedingham is driving outside off and producing a thick outside edge.

Smith is diving at full-stretch and taking another wonderful catch in full flight.

With the 221st grab of his Test career, Smith overtakes Joe Root as the outfield player with the most catches in the history of the game — again.

Bedingham out for 49.

South Africa 4-99.

Sun 11 Oct 2026 at 8:08pmSun 11 Oct 2026 at 8:08pm

30th over - Lyon continues his impressive spell

Lyon is bang on the money once again and Stubbs is forward and working a single through the covers.

Beingham is driving but only finding wide mid-off. No run.

He then pushes one down to long-on for a single.

He moves to 49.

And Stubbs is defending to conclude the over.

Sun 11 Oct 2026 at 8:04pmSun 11 Oct 2026 at 8:04pm

29th over - Cummins goes again

The Australian captain is bowling to the new batter.

It's a bit of a gift to start with and Stubbs is back and pulling a ball on a nothing length out through midwicket for a couple.

Straight and full from Cummins and Stubbs is forward and defending.

Cummins tells Lyon to get out on the rope at square leg and proceeds to fire in a bouncer. A single brings Bedingham on strike.

And he's defending the final ball of the over.

Sun 11 Oct 2026 at 8:00pmSun 11 Oct 2026 at 8:00pm

28th over continued - Stubbs to the middle

And Lyon has three to come in the over.

Stubbs is off the mark with an attractive drive out to the sweeper on the cover boundary.

Bedingham is defending.

And a dot to finish off a successful over for the Aussies.

Sun 11 Oct 2026 at 7:57pmSun 11 Oct 2026 at 7:57pm

Out! Bavuma departs!

What a catch from Steve Smith!

That is brilliant awareness

Temba Bavuma is playing a reverse sweep and getting a fair chunk of it.

But Smith, at slip, is already moving to his right, anticipating the chance that's about to fall his way.

He's falling over slightly as he takes a very, very good catch.

Telepathic.

South Africa 3-93.

Sun 11 Oct 2026 at 7:57pmSun 11 Oct 2026 at 7:57pm

28th over - Lyon carries on

Sun 11 Oct 2026 at 7:53pmSun 11 Oct 2026 at 7:53pm

27th over - Captain to captain

Ooh that's brilliant from Cummins.

On a length and angling into Bavuma, the ball jags off the surface and hits the South African captain in the hip region.

Slightly shorter and Bavuma is back and defending.

Bavuma attempts a flat-bat shot towards the off-side but instead under edges the ball back towards Cummins.

Really effective, consistent bowling from Pat here.

But Bavuma is able to relieve some of the pressure with a well-taken single into the covers.

Bedingham swings hard but can't pierce the infield. That's over.
