The suspension of eight opposition MPs from the Lok Sabha is expected to be lifted on Tuesday, sources said, following a decision taken at a meeting convened by Speaker Om Birla.

Seven Congress MPs and one CPI(M) MP were suspended last month for unruly behaviour during the first part of the Budget Session, following a resolution passed by the House.

The suspension was originally set to last for the entire session, which is scheduled to conclude on April 2. Opposition parties, however, have repeatedly urged the Speaker to revoke the suspensions during one of the sittings.

When Congress members had requested the revocation earlier, Speaker Birla had noted that such action is taken when members climb on tables or disrupt the House. Since the second leg of the Budget Session began on March 9, the revocation of the eight MPs has remained a key demand of the opposition.

Sources said there was a broad consensus at Monday’s meeting that the opposition would maintain decorum if the suspensions are lifted.

Members are expected to remain in the Well of the House and avoid crossing over to the treasury benches. Activities such as tearing papers, climbing on chairs and tables, or using AI-generated posters to register protests will also be avoided.

Birla expressed “deep concern" on Sunday over the use of banners, placards, posters and certain language in the House by some MPs. In a letter to all party leaders, he urged members to ensure discipline and maintain ethical conduct.

He reminded MPs that the Lok Sabha has a long tradition of dignified debate, but recent behaviour has, in his view, undermined the dignity and prestige of the country’s parliamentary democracy.
