A beloved dad-of-two has sadly died weeks after he was targeted in a vile attack on the street outside his home, leaving his doting children and ex-wife devastated.
Graham Hyslop, 55, was knocked out of his wheelchair in an alleged attack outside his home in Sandown, on the Isle of Wight, on February 19 this year. The dad, police said, was spat on, kicked and robbed of his bank card. Three teenagers, aged 14 and 15, were arrested, including a 14 and 15-year-old on suspicion of robbery, a third 14-year-old boy from Ryde who was arrested on suspicion of robbery and possession of an offensive weapon.
Graham was rushed to hospital following the incident and treated for injuries to his head and arms, and returned to his life as normal after he was released. His ex-wife tragically confirmed that the dad has since died and remembered him as a "lovely" family man who "didn't deserve" what happened to him as they raise funds for his funeral.
Mr Hyslop's death is being treated as unexplained and remains under investigation. At thIs stage it is understood the death is not being linked to the assault last month.
Hazel Hyslop, 60, who has two children with Graham, told the Mirror she separated from the kindhearted dad in 2017 after he experienced multiple heart attacks and didn't want her "to be lumbered with any of her bills". The two, she said, were "best friends" who still spoke every day following their separation.
On the day he was attacked, Graham was living in Sandown, Hazel said, and had ventured outside in his wheelchair to pick up an item that was dropped onto his property.
She said: "He was living over in Sandown, and somebody had thrown a can over the over the wall. So he got out in his wheelchair to pick up the can." She said Graham's alleged attackers walked over to him and allegedly "spat on his back, kicked him, and pushed him out of his wheelchair".
During the attack, she added, his phone went underneath his body, but his bank card flew out and was pinched by his alleged assailants.
She said: "Luckily, his phone went underneath him, but his bank card flew out. They picked up the bank card." He messaged Hazel afterwards telling her: "I think I've just been mugged." While the traumatic incident had knocked Graham, it didn't keep him down, and he was "on the up" before his death.
He died in his sleep on Sunday, March 1, with Hazel and Graham's mum turning up at his home after he failed to answer his phone that morning. She said: "We went over there and his landlady was standing in the drive and she said, I'm just, I'm so sorry."
His death has left the family devastated, and Hazel said she is "just angry". She said: "I'm just angry, to be honest, because he shouldn't be dead, you know, what happened to him, he didn't deserve. He was such a family man, and he would do anything for anybody. She added: "We just can't get our heads around it. It just seems like we've been a really bad dream."
His family is still awaiting autopsy results. He leaves behind two children, 19-year-old Chloe and Jack, 20, who have struggled in different ways following their beloved dad's death.
The family is now raising money to pay for Graham's funeral, with a GoFundMe seeking £3,500 to give him the sendoff he deserves. Hazel said: "We need to raise the funds for his funeral so he can be sent off in a dignified manner and his children, family and friends can say goodbye properly."
The Mirror has contacted Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary for comment.
