Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration is postponing NYPD officers’ holiday pay ahead of the Fourth of July, even as officers work 12-hour tours during a severe heat wave and a busy stretch of summer events, The Post has learned.
City officials told union leaders that holiday paychecks for officers will be issued in the third week of July instead of the second week, as has been the practice in previous years, according to an email Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Hendry sent to members.
“This is not only a violation of our contractual rights. (It’s) also an insult to PBA members who are working long hours in extreme heat to meet the extraordinary security demands of the upcoming holiday weekend,” Hendry wrote in the Wednesday message, which was obtained by The Post.
Hendry said the union would challenge the delay formally, writing, “The PBA will therefore file a grievance seeking to bar the City from delaying payment of the holiday checks, and we will continue to pursue every measure to hold the current City administration accountable for its refusal to support our members.”
Union officials filed the grievance Wednesday with the NYPD’s Office of Labor Relations, sources said.
The amount officers receive in holiday checks depends on their place on the department’s pay scale, but sources said members at a basic level would receive nearly $2,800.

Hendry’s email also noted that a similar delay occurred in January, when that month’s holiday check was pushed back shortly after Mamdani took office.
Officials at that time contended the delay was necessary because the city’s payroll office needed to update its systems to deal with new tax requirements, the email states.
The grievance could go to arbitration if not corrected, sources said.
“This time, the City has offered no excuse for the delay,” Hendry’s email states.
Thousands of uniformed officers working 12-hour shifts will be deployed across the city leading up to — and including — the Fourth of July holiday, Mamdani and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said during a joint news conference Wednesday.
The events start with Taylor Swift’s and Travis Kelce’s Madison Square Garden wedding Friday, followed the International Naval and Aviation Review, Parade of Sails and traditional Macy’s Fourth of July fireworks on Saturday.
They’ll continue Sunday with the Round of 16 World Cup match between Brazil and Norway at MetLife Stadium.
City Hall and NYPD officials didn’t immediately return requests for comment.
