Manchester City vs Brighton kicks off at 15:00 GMT on Saturday, October 31 at the Etihad Stadium.

Man City vs Brighton Premier League preview

Round one went to City, but only just. After edging past Brighton on penalties in the EFL Cup fourth round on Wednesday, Enzo Maresca’s side face the Seagulls again at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, this time with Premier League points at stake and their big names back in the side.

The cup tie was a rollercoaster. City’s young side twice fell behind, first to a Malick Yalcouye goal after 30 minutes and then to Georginio Rutter’s strike just after half-time.

Mateo Kovacic equalised with a 25-yard strike before the break and Vitor Reis scored his first goal for the club to make it 2-2.

Geronimo Rulli was then the hero in the shootout, saving from Yasin Ayari and Lewis Dunk as City won 4-3 on penalties in front of a record domestic cup crowd of 55,345 at their home.

Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Aston Villa ended City’s perfect start in the Premier League and was their second loss in four games in all competitions. They have conceded 10 goals in their last five matches.

The good news for Maresca is that Erling Haaland, Elliot Anderson, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Ruben Dias and Josko Gvardiol were all given time off and missed the tie, so should be fresh.

Brighton showed again how dangerous they can be. Fabian Hurzeler’s side start the matchday as Premier League’s top scorers by three goals, although they have now gone three games without a win, drawing at Jablonec in the Conference League and losing 2-0 at Liverpool before the 90-minute stalemate at City.

Recent history suggests this won’t be easy for City. They have now failed to win any of their last five games against Brighton in all competitions, although Albion haven’t kept a clean sheet in their last 19 meetings with City.

Manchester City vs Brighton team news

Maresca’s first-choice players are expected to return after being rested. Haaland, who scored City’s goal at Villa Park, will lead the line.

Antoine Semenyo remains out with a knee injury and is expected to be sidelined for around another seven weeks. Right-back Matheus Nunes is also a doubt.

Brighton received a major boost on Wednesday with Mats Wieffer and Yankuba Minteh both returning to the squad and coming on as second-half substitutes following injuries.

Ferdi Kadioglu and Chema Andres missed out with hip injuries the pair sustained at Liverpool. Kaoru Mitoma, Evan Ferguson, Stefanos Tzimas, Femi Azeez and Zadok Yohanna remain out.
