A man has been found dead and three others have been rushed to hospital following suspected carbon monoxide poisoning at a home.

Emergency services rushed to a Mount Gambier home in South Australia where officers discovered four occupants were unconscious inside the property just before 9am on Saturday July 11.

A police spokesperson said: "Police are preparing a report for the Coroner following an incident at Mount Gambier this morning. Just before 9am on Saturday 11 July, emergency services were called to a Penola Road home after four occupants were found unconscious inside the property.

"Sadly, a 55-year-old man died at the scene. Three other occupants were taken to hospital for treatment of suspected carbon monoxide poisoning. Limestone Coast police are investigating, and the incident is not believed to be suspicious at this time."

Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas that can make you seriously ill if you breathe it in. Carbon monoxide can be made by fires and appliances that burn gas, wood, oil or coal.

Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning

Carbon monoxide gas is colourless and does not smell, so you cannot tell if it is around you. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include:

• a headache
• dizziness
• feeling sick or being sick
• feeling weak
• tiredness and confusion
• chest and muscle pain
• shortness of breath
• your face turning hot and red (flushing) – but redness may be harder to see on brown and black skin
• loss of vision

The symptoms may come and go. They may get worse when you spend time in an affected room or building and get better when you leave or go outside.
