The Mumbai Indians’ (MI) high-stakes gamble on Hardik Pandya‘s leadership has resulted in a highly scrutinized campaign. The five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions concluded their IPL 2026 journey on a low note, leaving fans and analysts questioning the franchise’s direction. Following a decisive final-game defeat against the Rajasthan Royals on Sunday, Mumbai Indians batting coach Kieron Pollard offered a candid assessment of the team’s struggles and Hardik’s turbulent tenure as captain.

MI coach Kieron Pollard gives no-nonsense verdict on Hardik Pandya after poor IPL 2026 campaign

Hardik’s future as the captain of Mumbai Indians appears increasingly uncertain after the team finished a disappointing 9th in the IPL 2026 standings. Tasked with steering a star-studded roster back to its glory days, Hardik struggled to extract the best from his squad and faced significant challenges individually with both bat and ball.

Speaking to reporters at the post-match press conference, Pollard did not shy away from the harsh reality, admitting that the skipper’s leadership stint “has not gone as well” as expected.

From a leadership perspective on Hardik, yes, it has not gone as well as he would have wanted as an individual, it might not have gone how we would have wanted as a management staff. But one thing you should know is that we have tried each and everything to give him the best opportunity to lead the franchise, to do well,” Pollard stated.

Despite the individual scrutiny surrounding Hardik, Pollard emphasized that the season’s outcome was a collective failure rather than the fault of a single individual. He noted that the squad and management worked together throughout the campaign, but the execution consistently fell short. Pollard expressed a desire for the team to take time to reflect on the season and look toward future improvement.

When asked if Mumbai Indians required an immediate, sweeping overhaul due to the number of veteran players in the squad, Pollard advocated for a measured approach over reactionary changes. He explained that making immediate statements would be irresponsible, emphasizing that the organization needs time and space for a fair assessment to understand where things went wrong before making informed decisions.

Mumbai Indians endure nightmare run in IPL 2026

The numbers from the IPL 2026 season paint a stark picture for the Mumbai Indians, who managed only 4 wins out of 14 league matches, finishing 9th out of 10 teams with a negative Net Run Rate (NRR) of -0.584.

The campaign concluded with consecutive defeats, including a 30-run loss to the Rajasthan Royals on May 24 and a 4-wicket defeat against the Kolkata Knight Riders on May 20. A brief moment of momentum occurred on May 14 with a 6-wicket win over the Punjab Kings, but it was preceded by a string of tight losses, such as a 2-wicket defeat to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru on May 10.

The mid-season performance presented significant difficulties, characterized by heavy losses, including an 8-wicket defeat to Chennai Super Kings on May 2 and a 103-run loss against the same rivals earlier in April. While the team secured occasional decisive victories, like a 99-run win over the Gujarat Titans on April 20 and a 6-wicket win against KKR in their season opener on March 29, they struggled to maintain consistency. Early-season setbacks against Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru ultimately set a challenging tone for the remainder of their 2026 campaign.
