Heavy overnight rain that continued through on Thursday morning (July 9, 2026) battered Delhi, triggering widespread waterlogging, uprooting trees and leaving roads gridlocked.

Safdarjung, the capital’s base weather station, recorded 72.6 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours that ended at 8:30 a.m., the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

Tukhmirpur in northeast Delhi’s Khajuri received the highest rainfall at 160 mm during this period, it said.

Widespread rainfall soaked parts of Rajasthan, with the Met department forecasting extremely heavy rainfall in isolated areas of Kota and Bharatpur divisions on Thursday (July 9, 2026).

Badesar and Nimbahera in Chittorgarh district and Bayana in Bharatpur district recorded nine centimetres of rainfall -- the highest in the state during the 24-hour period ending today morning.

The department has forecast moderate to heavy rainfall at several places and said extremely heavy rain is likely in isolated parts of the Kota and Bharatpur divisions.

Heavy rainfall is likely to continue at isolated places in the Bharatpur division and adjoining districts on July 10, while rainfall activity is expected to decline in the rest of the State.

Torrential rainfall and severe flooding in the Khalapur area of Raigad district have triggered a major industrial emergency, with approximately 3,000 gas cylinders from an HPCL bottling plant being swept away into the Patalganga River, officials said on Thursday (July 9, 2026).

The incident occurred at the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) bottling plant located in Chavane, Panvel taluka. As the Patalganga River swelled due to incessant rains in the Khalapur taluka, the strong currents washed away a massive stock of both filled and empty cylinders into the water.

Monsoon-related incidents have claimed three lives and forced the evacuation of nearly 800 persons across the Thane district in the past week, while a lightning strike in the latest weather-related incident left two persons injured, officials said on Thursday (July 9, 2026).

The district administration said in an official release that the fatalities include one person each from Thane city, Ambernath, and Mira Bhayander.

A total of 11 persons have sustained injuries in various rain-related accidents during the season, the official said.

As heavy rains continued in parts of Kerala, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday (July 9, 2026) issued an orange alert in three districts of the state for the day.

The IMD issued an orange alert in the districts of Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad.

It also issued a yellow alert in six other districts -- Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kannur and Kasaragod -- for the day.

Incessant heavy rainfall across the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) this morning triggered severe waterlogging in several areas, disrupting daily life and slowing down traffic for morning commuters in Noida and Ghaziabad.Despite heavy monsoon showers and a record 228.1 mm rainfall, prompting ‘red’ and ‘orange’ alerts across Delhi, the targeted civic action limited widespread waterlogging. 

Authorities carried out preemptive desilting and cleared blockages in major stormwater drains, including Narela and Dwarka. That kept key underpasses like NHPC Chowk clear and traffic moving.

Some areas are still flooded. Geeta Colony saw significant water accumulation after intense bursts. 

In the national capital, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has taken direct stock of the situation, directing all administrative agencies to remain on “high alert” to mitigate the impact of the downpour.

Three fishermen were rescued after their canoe capsized in a river near Morjim beach in North Goa, officials said today.

The incident occurred around noon yesterday, following which a local resident alerted the Goa government-contracted agency responsible for lifeguard and beach safety services in the State.

A jet ski was deployed to the spot, and personnel from the agency rescued two fishermen from the water, while the third fisherman was safely assisted onto an accompanying canoe, they said.

Goa is currently witnessing the peak of the southwest monsoon, with strong winds, rough seas and turbulent waters making the coastline unsafe for swimming. Swimming remains prohibited at the state’s beaches during the monsoon season, while a seasonal fishing ban is also in force.

Mumbai woke up to an overcast sky, but largely rain-free conditions today after days of incessant monsoon showers, even as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast intermittent rainfall later in the day.

Despite the cloudy weather, it did not rain in most parts of the city during the morning, providing relief after a prolonged wet spell that had caused waterlogging, tree falls, traffic snarls and disruption to suburban rail services.

The IMD has forecast a generally cloudy sky with intermittent light to moderate rainfall in the city and suburbs during the day. Heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places, accompanied by lightning, thunder and occasional gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.

In view of the India Meteorological Department issuing a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in Wayanad, District Collector D.R. Meghashree has declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including anganwadis, religious education classes, tuition centres, special classes, and professional colleges, in the district today. 

However, the holiday will not apply to residential schools and residential colleges.

IMD’s weather warnings for different districts across the country:

Cumulative Rainfall(mm) over Delhi-NCR from 08:30 a.m. of July 8, 2026 to 05:30 a.m. of July 9, 2026.

The tourist destination of Raja’s seat in Madikeri will be out of bounds for the public from July 9 to 12 in view of the traffic diversions introduced in the town following a landslide that has occurred near KSRTC bus stand.

In view of the landslide triggered in the wake of widespread rains and strong winds across Kodagu district over the last few days, the authorities have diverted all vehicles exiting from the private and KSRTC bus stands to pass through Raja’s seat road.

As the volume of traffic on this road has increased significantly, and with members of the public and tourists parking their vehicles near Raja’s Seat, traffic congestion has become a recurring problem. The heavy crowding in the area has also been causing frequent disruption to the smooth flow of traffic, said a statement from the Deputy Commissioner’s office.

Heavy rain that has been lashing parts of Kerala powered by an off-shore trough along the West Coast will continue for a couple of more days. 

A yellow alert has been issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode and Malappuram.

According to a weather bulletin issued by the IMD, an off-shore trough runs at mean sea level from south Gujarat to central Kerala. Under the influence of the trough, the State is likely to receive moderate heavy rainfall for the next four days.

Rain lashed parts of Delhi in the early hours of today, extending a wet spell in the national capital and bringing much-needed relief to residents from the recent humid conditions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an “Orange Alert” for the capital, signalling heavy rainfall over the region through most of the day.

Continuous rain led to slight waterlogging in parts of the city, including the New Delhi Railway Station, Munirka and other parts.

According to IMD, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is likely over Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi and West Uttar Pradesh until July 10. A fresh spell of rain is expected to continue over Northeast Uttar Pradesh till July 13, while East Rajasthan is likely to see similar activity on July 9.
