The flood situation worsened in Arunachal Pradesh, as one more person died, taking the toll to four, while 21 others were injured in the State, where 90,499 people were affected in almost all 28 districts, the authorities said on Tuesday (June 30).

Two persons also remained missing as heavy rain, causing flash floods and landslides, battered the State over the past seven days, damaging houses, roads, bridges and public infrastructure, a report of the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) said.- PTI

The monthly average rainfall over India is expected to be below normal during July, the India Meteorological Department said on Tuesday (June 30) in its monthly forecast.

The weather department stated that July is most likely to see 94% of the long-period average rainfall (1971-2020). The LPA rainfall over India in July is about 280.4 mm.

LPA refers to the rainfall recorded over a particular region for a given period, such as a month or a season, averaged over a long period, typically 30 to 50 years.

Some areas of northwest and northeast India, east-central India and the eastern peninsular region are likely to receive normal to above rainfall, the IMD said.- PTI

Flash floods and landslides affected more than 3,100 people across 14 villages in Arunachal Pradesh’s Lower Siang district, officials said on Tuesday (June 30).

District Information and Public Relations Officer (DIPRO) Augusti Jamoh said the disaster has extensively damaged wet rice cultivation fields, private properties and public infrastructure across the Nari-Koyu assembly constituency.

Road connectivity has been completely snapped in several villages, including Tabiripo Saku, Loglu, Rotte, Rame and Koyu Village, leaving nearly 500 households isolated. However, no loss of life or injuries has been reported so far, he said.- PTI

India recorded its driest June in more than a decade and ‌the fifth driest since record-keeping began in 1901, ⁠with monsoon rainfall 39.8% below the long-term average, weather department data ‌showed.

The rainfall deficit, caused by ‌the delayed advance of ‌the annual ⁠monsoon, has slowed the ⁠planting of summer-sown crops such as rice, corn, cotton and soybeans.

It has also kept ‌parts of the northern plains unusually hot, with maximum temperatures exceeding 42 degrees ‌Celsius (107.6 degrees Fahrenheit) in some regions.

TGPDS data for June revealed that from June 1 to June 30, Telangana received 115.3 mm of rainfall against the normal 130.3 mm. Hyderabad too finished the month below normal, receiving 103 mm against the expected 107.4 mm. Of the 33 districts, only four recorded excess rainfall, 12 remained in the normal category, 16 ended the month with deficient rainfall and Hanumakonda emerged as the only district in the large deficient category, recording 40.9 mm against its normal of 142.1 mm, a shortfall of 71%.

Mumbai is preparing for intensified rainfall, with the IMD forecasting heavy showers and thunderstorms for the city and its suburbs. The forecast issued at 8 a.m. indicated a generally cloudy sky with a possibility of thunderstorms and lightning at isolated places. The IMD had earlier issued a yellow alert for the city, which may be updated later in the day.

Himachal Pradesh received 63.8 mm of rain against a normal of 95.4 mm from June 1 to 29, marking a deficit of 33%, officials said.

According to data from the Shimla meteorological office, 11 of the 12 districts in the state received deficit rainfall in June, barring Kinnaur, which received 7% excess rain.

The rain deficit was 54% in Sirmaur, 53% in Lahaul-Spiti, 45 per cent in Kullu, 41% in Mandi, 35% in Kangra, 33% in Bilaspur, 28% each in Chamba and Una, 27% in Hamirpur, 17% in Solan and 6% in Shimla, the data showed.

The southwest monsoon deficit nationwide has increased from 35% to 43%; the winds’ northward advance was stalled near Mumbai; and both the U.S. NOAA and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) expect a moderate-to-strong El Niño this year. 

The Agriculture Ministry has already prioritised 111 districts out of 315 vulnerable ones based on their irrigation coverage. Extreme heat has been reducing farm labour productivity. High heat and rain shortfall have sown anxiety over the cardamom harvest in Idukki, a fate that bodes ill for other plantation crops in the Western Ghats.

Akasa Air issued travel advisories warning passengers of possible flight disruptions due to adverse weather conditions in Mumbai and Dharamshala.

Akasa Air said heavy rainfall in Mumbai could lead to delays across its network and urged passengers to check their flight status before leaving for the airport.

“Due to heavy rainfall in Mumbai, some flights across our network may be delayed. We realise that this may inconvenience your travel plans and seek your patience and understanding. While this situation is completely beyond our control, please rest assured that our teams are always ready to assist you,” the airline said in a statement.

The IMD forecast heavy rains in the Western Ghat regions of Tamil Nadu from July 1 as the southwest monsoon was still active in the State.

The latest weather report from the Regional Meteorological Centre said that moderate rain at isolated places, with thunderstorms and lightning, and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph are likely to occur over Nilgiris, Theni, Dindigul, Erode, and Salem districts, and the ghat areas of Coimbatore and Tirupur districts from Wednesday (July 1, 2026).

The data further said that as the trough runs from north coastal Tamil Nadu to the Comorin area and extends up to 0.9 km above mean sea level, light to moderate rain at isolated places with thunderstorm and lightning at one or two places is likely to occur over the rest of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal area during the same period.

Mumbai is gearing up for intensified rains, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavy showers and thunderstorms for the city and its suburbs, civic officials said.

As per the IMD forecast issued at 8 a.m., the city is likely to witness heavy rainfall and a generally cloudy sky, with a possibility of thunderstorms and lightning at isolated places, they said.

Earlier, the IMD had issued a yellow alert for the city, indicating the possibility of heavy rainfall at isolated places. It may update it later today, depending on the weather conditions.
