Napoli and Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay is to undergo heart surgery due to a “mild benign arrhythmia”, the Serie A club have announced.

McTominay has featured in both of Napoli’s games so far this season but was substituted after 56 minutes of the Partenopei’s 2-1 defeat to Como on Sunday.

In a statement, Napoli said McTominay would be available again after the international break.

He will miss Napoli’s next four games. They visit defending Serie A champions Inter Milan on Saturday before taking on Arsenal in the Champions League next Wednesday. Their final league games before the international break come against Bologna and Fiorentina.

The surgery means he will also miss the first Scotland games under new manager Sebastien Pocognoli.

Scotland face two games with Slovenia, sandwiched by matches with Switzerland and North Macedonia, as they begin their UEFA Nations League campaign in an extended international break.

McTominay has scored 27 goals and provided seven assists for Napoli since joining from Napoli in 2024, helping them to the Serie A title in his debut season and the Supercoppa Italiana last season.

In a post on Instagram, McTominay wrote: “See you soon Napoli. I won’t take long.”
