Three “fire-throated” hummingbirds with iridescent metallic colors hovering in front of a flower mark the beginning of the extensive feature “Costa Rica: Nature’s Treasure,” published by National Geographic Traveler magazine in its September German edition.

The 11-page narrative then presents our country as a destination where nature is the central theme of the travel experience.

The feature is the result of a partnership between the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT) and NatGeo Germany and highlights the extraordinary diversity of landscapes, along with a range of outdoor activities that a German or European traveler can enjoy in a relatively small area.

Journalist Amelia Duggan—who took an immersive tour of Costa Rica—emphasized that our natural wealth is not merely something to be admired; rather, it invites tourists to explore it and experience it with all five senses.

Duggan also highlighted other topics, such as conservation efforts, the real opportunity to observe wildlife in its natural habitats, and how it’s possible to explore very different ecosystems during a single trip.

Costa Rica is featured in the NatGeo Germany article as a country that has made the protection of its natural heritage and sustainability essential elements of its tourism offering, reinforcing its international standing as a global leader in sustainable tourism.

The article also conveys that getting to know Costa Rica means immersing oneself in its communities, culture, cuisine, and interactions with Costa Ricans. The concept of “pura vida” serves as an expression of that identity and a unique way of connecting with people and appreciating the simple, authentic experiences a vacation there would offer to potential travelers.

“Germany is one of our main source markets for tourists from Europe, and partnerships of this nature allow us to showcase our diverse tourism offerings to thousands of potential tourists and inspire them to turn those images and the report into unforgettable experiences on a future trip to Costa Rica,” said Marcos V. Borges, executive president of the ICT.

The executive concluded, “At the ICT, we will continue to focus on strategic and innovative promotion that strengthens our positioning, attracting more tourists, investments, and benefits for communities—all of which translate into greater social progress for our country.”

More Than Just a Natural Treasure

The article “Schatzkammer der Natur” (“Treasure of Nature”) in National Geographic Traveler Germany mentions destinations such as the Pacuare River in the province of Limón, the Nairi Awari indigenous territory—home to the Cabécar community—Cerro de la Muerte, San Gerardo de Dota, and Los Quetzales National Park.

The team also visited the Osa Peninsula, Carate Beach, and Corcovado National Park; subsequently, the German publication explored the Gulf of Nicoya, including places such as Chiquita Island and Jesusita Island.

According to data from the ICT, as part of the partnership, more than 35,000 copies were printed for this edition, which will be distributed throughout Germany. In addition, the article will be featured on NatGeo’s digital platforms, expanding the publication’s reach across Europe.

During the first eight months of 2026, more than 300,000 European tourists visited Costa Rica by air, and nearly 50,000 German travelers did the same, according to ICT data.
