It’s easy to overlook the soft glow in your bedroom at night, whether it’s from streetlights sneaking past the curtains, a forgotten TV screen humming quietly in the corner, or that persistent blue light blinking from your phone charger.

It all seems pretty harmless, right? But researchers are starting to see a different story. New findings are pointing to something bigger than just a restless night: the light filling your room could be quietly reshaping your heart.A team published their work in the European Heart Journal after studying over 11,000 people. They discovered that folks exposed to more light at night had clear, measurable shifts in their heart’s structure just three years down the line.

That wasn’t all. Greater exposure to artificial light after dark went hand in hand with a raised risk of heart failure, atrial fibrillation, heart attacks, strokes, and even cardiovascular death. It sounds dramatic, but what they’re really saying is that the humble nightlight, or the LED on your Wi-Fi router, might be another piece of the heart disease puzzle we didn’t think to look for.

So, what happened?

Professor Lu Qi and his team at Tulane dove into the UK Biobank, picking out more than 11,000 people who didn’t have heart problems when the study started.

Instead of just asking how bright people thought their bedrooms were, the researchers went high-tech. Participants wore sensors on their wrists for a whole week to actually measure their exposure to light at night. Then, three years later, scientists scanned their hearts using detailed cardiac MRIs.

They drew a line between those basking in more than three lux of light (a little more than typical ambient light from a streetlamp) and those who slept in near darkness.

What did they see?

Not huge, obvious heart damage, but subtle differences that matter. People exposed to more light at night ended up with thicker walls and larger muscle mass in their left ventricles, which is the part of the heart that does the heavy lifting by pumping blood full of oxygen through your body. On top of that, their heart muscles weren’t contracting quite as efficiently. And these weren’t tiny, ignorable changes: for the group with the brightest bedrooms, the heart’s left ventricle muscle was about 2.4% bulkier and the wall 1.5% thicker, with myocardial contraction down by 1.9% compared to those who slept in darkness.The changes didn’t just stick to one chamber. The right ventricle and left atrium got in on the action too, with evidence of chamber enlargement and poorer contraction. This pattern, called cardiac remodelling, means the heart starts adapting to chronic stress, slowly changing its shape and structure. It’s a slow burn, at first. These aren’t instant heart attacks, but warning signs brewing in the background that could set the stage for bigger problems down the road.Now, you might wonder: isn’t this just about getting lousy sleep? That’s part of it. Light is one of the best cues our body has for telling time, syncing the internal clock (our circadian rhythm) that controls everything from how alert we feel in the morning to hormone shifts at night. If there’s too much light after dusk, melatonin production gets squashed, and it becomes harder to fall and stay asleep. In this study, shorter sleep explained about a quarter to half of the link between bright nights and heart changes.

The rest? Scientists think it might involve a jumble of things your body does behind the scenes: messing with the nervous system, sparking inflammation, or throwing off how your blood vessels work.But that’s not the whole story.The researchers went wider, tracking over 73,000 people for up to a decade. The numbers are pretty striking: more light at night translated into nearly a third higher risk of heart failure, a quarter higher chance of a heart attack, and 33% higher risk of stroke, even after adjusting for other risk factors.

However, it’s important to note that this research can’t prove light directly triggers heart disease, but it really raises eyebrows.One detail stands out: daytime light didn’t show the same kind of risk. This isn’t about total exposure, but when you’re exposed. Our body expects darkness at night, and stripping that away seems to matter.

So, what should you actually do with this information?

The study doesn’t hand you a bright-line rule for how dark your bedroom should be.

Still, the message is clear: get your room as dark as you comfortably can. Advice from the European Society of Cardiology is practical, not dramatic; so use blackout curtains if you can, keep bedside lights warm and dim, and don’t ignore those little power lights. Tape over them, unplug what you don’t need, maybe even move your phone charger, especially if it glows.Of course, there are limits here. The researchers only measured nighttime light for a single week, and their devices couldn’t pick up on exactly what color or wavelength of light people were seeing. Plus, most folks in the UK Biobank tend to be White and fairly healthy, so these findings might not cover everyone. And the study itself can’t say for sure that bedroom light directly causes heart trouble; just that the two seem to go together in a meaningful way.
