Amid the ongoing power tussle in the Punjab Congress, the party’s State in-charge Bhupesh Baghel on Wednesday ruled out the possibility of a leadership change, asserting that Amarinder Singh Raja Warring would continue as the Punjab Congress president, even as party leaders were making efforts to resolve the ongoing issues through dialogue.

Mr. Baghel’s remark came at a time when internal strife surrounding power control within the Punjab Congress has been intensifying ahead of the Assembly polls, due in early 2027.

“When the [party] high command takes a decision, it is not changed,” said Mr. Baghel, responding to media persons on the possibility of a change in the State leadership. Asserting that repeatedly changing the decision surrounding the leadership was not a child’s play, he said Mr. Warring would continue as Punjab Pradesh Congress president.

On July 1, the All India Congress Committee revamped the Punjab unit. While Mr. Warring was retained as the PPCC chief, former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi was appointed to lead the campaign committee ahead of the Assembly elections. Mr. Channi, who is currently a Congress MP, is believed to be upset with the revamp. He, along with a faction of his supporters, reportedly had been pressing for a meeting with the party’s central leadership. Mr. Baghel said he would soon meet Mr. Channi.

Meanwhile, Congress MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla met Mr. Channi and pointed out that senior party leaders were making sincere efforts to resolve the ongoing issues through dialogue.

“Met with former Punjab Chief Minister Mr. Charanjit Singh Channi today. Earlier, I also had constructive meetings with Punjab in-charge Bhupesh Baghel and Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring. Several senior leaders are making sincere efforts to resolve the ongoing issues through dialogue and strengthen unity in the interest of Punjab and the party,” he said in a post on X.

Meanwhile, Mr. Baghel convened a meeting at Punjab Congress Bhawan here with Congress leaders and office-bearers, in which detailed discussions were held regarding strengthening the organisation from the booth level, enhancing coordination with workers, and accelerating preparations for the Punjab Assembly elections 2027.
