Sir Paul McCartney also receives his first ever Mercury nomination at the age 84, for The Boys of Dungeon Lane

Sir Paul McCartney is in line to win his first ever Mercury Prize, but he faces stiff competition from the likes of Olivia Dean and Raye.

The Beatles star is nominated for the first time with The oys Of Dungeon Lane, which became his 24th number one studio album when it was released in May.

The 14-track record was named after a place close to his childhood home in Forthlin Road in the Liverpool suburb of Speke and recounts memories from his formative years.

He is up against Dean’s The Art Of Loving, which won Album of the Year at the Brit Awards and Raye’s This Music May Contain Hope

Also on the shortlist are Dave’s The Boy Who Played The Harp, Florence And The Machine’s Everybody Scream, Dove Ellis’s Blizzard and Knats’ A Great Day In Newcastle.

The list is completed by Kojey Radical’s Don’t Look Down, Former Little Mix star Jade with That’s Showbiz Baby!, Nia Archives for Emotional Junglist, Suede with Antidepressants and War Child Records with HELP(2).

There was a surprise omission for Lily Allen and her West End Girl album. Harry Styles’ Kiss All The Time, Disco Occasionally and Gorillaz’, The Mountain, were other notable absences on the list.

Albums are nominated based on musical merit, irrespective of how successful the record or act have been in the year. The nominated acts will perform at the ceremony on Thursday October 22, which is being held at the Utilita Arena Newcastle for the second year running after moving out of London last year. Sam Fender took home the 2025 prize for his album People Watching. Other winners in recent years include English Teacher, Little Simz, Arlo Parks and Wolf Alice. Along with a trophy, the winner of the Mercury Prize receives £25,000.
