An aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing at Belfast City Airport on Sunday (March 29) evening after powerful wind gusts sparked serious safety concerns.

A number of flights were also held in holding patterns for over two hours as a precautionary measure before touching down, as fierce winds battered the harbour runway in East Belfast. Services from Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool all faced significant delays due to the adverse weather conditions.

Wind gusts of 33mph were recorded across the area throughout Sunday.

In a statement released on Sunday, the airport confirmed the emergency landing was carried out as a precautionary measure, and that all passengers and crew disembarked the aircraft safely.

Approximately five fire engines from the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service were placed on standby, reports Belfast Live.
