Prime Minister Modi on Tuesday (July 7) was conferred with Indonesia’s highest civilian honour, the ‘Bintang Adipurna of the Republic of Indonesia’.

Expressing his gratitude, PM Modi said, “I accept the Bintang Adipurna of the Republic of Indonesia with great humility.” 

He further added, “This honour belongs to the people of India. It reflects the warmth and affection of the people of Indonesia. It is also a tribute to the historic and deeply-rooted ties between India and Indonesia.”

India and Indonesia signed agreements in health, education and other sectors on Tuesday, including one on the establishment of an overseas campus of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced in Jakarta.

Mr. Modi landed in Jakarta on Monday to a red-carpet welcome in the first leg of his three-nation tour, which will also cover Australia and New Zealand, to strengthen trade and security cooperation. “We are going to establish an overseas campus of the prestigious Indian Institute of Management Bangalore in Indonesia. This will greatly benefit young people across the ASEAN region,” Mr. Modi said while delivering a joint press statement with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.

The IIM Bangalore campus will be set up at the Singhasari Special Economic Zone in Indonesia’s East Java province.

IIM Ahmedabad was the first premier Indian business school to open a campus outside India. It was launched in Dubai last year.

In the health sector, India’s Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation and Indonesia’s National Agency of Drug and Food Control signed a memorandum of understanding.

Elaborating on the strategic agreements signed between New Delhi and Jakarta, Prime Minister Modi said, “Today, we have signed a significant agreement to enhance technological cooperation among our youth in areas such as AI, telecommunications, and digital public infrastructure.”

“We have also agreed to deepen startup collaboration between our two nations. We are going to establish a campus of India’s prestigious management institute, IIM Bangalore, in Indonesia; this will greatly benefit the youth across the entire ASEAN region,” he added.

Supplying BrahMos missiles to the Indonesian military, boosting maritime security, and strengthening critical mineral supply chains emerged as key outcomes from talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on Tuesday.

The two sides inked nearly a dozen agreements to significantly bolster two-way cooperation in several areas, including critical minerals, technology, food security, medicines and maritime security.

With the two sides aiming to bolster their defence ties, Indonesia has decided to import India’s air-to-air Astra missiles following the weapon’s success during Operation Sindoor, it is learnt.

“A golden era beckons both our nations,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in Indonesia, as he addressed a joint press conference with the Indonesian President. 

“We share a common culture in our history, shared trust in the present, and shared prosperity in our future. I am confident that, together, we will realize the visions of ‘ Indonesia Emas’ [Golden Indonesia] and a developed India.”

Speaking in Jakarta, Indonesia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India supports a two-state solution when it comes to the issue of Palestine. He made the statement as he spoke on the “turbulence” rocking global politics.

“In these times of global turbulence, India believes that the role of dialogue and diplomacy has become more critical than ever. Regarding the issue of Palestine, we support a two-state solution and long-term peace,” he said.

He noted that both countries have reached an agreement to further strengthen supply chains in the critical minerals and steel sectors. 

Mr. Modi also announced that India’s UPI is set to be integrated with Indonesia’s payment system.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday arrived in Indonesia on the first leg of his three-nation tour, aimed at further strengthening India’s Act East Policy, MAHASAGAR Vision and its commitment to a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific.

In a special gesture, Mr. Modi was received at the airport by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. In addition, four ministers were also present to receive the Prime Minister, who was accorded a traditional ceremonial welcome and a Guard of Honour.

“Landed in Jakarta. I’m touched by President Prabowo Subianto’s gesture of welcoming me at the airport,” Mr. Modi said in a social media post.

This is PM Modi’s first bilateral visit to Indonesia since the elevation of ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2018.
