In one of the world’s most sensitive geopolitical theatres, India is no longer on the sidelines---it is firmly at the table

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarks on his visit to Israel, the trip is being seen in diplomatic circles as part of a much larger West Asia outreach—one that government sources say has quietly transformed India’s standing in the region.
There was a time when India was viewed largely as a distant player in West Asia. Today, officials point out, New Delhi is seen as a strong, stable and credible power—one that can engage all sides in a deeply volatile neighbourhood without being seen as partisan. In a region often divided by conflict and competing alliances, India has positioned itself as neutral, dependable and trusted.
The momentum has been building steadily. In December, the prime minister travelled to Jordan and Oman, where discussions went beyond trade and diaspora ties to focus on sensitive geopolitical developments. Those conversations, sources say, reinforced India’s role as a country that can speak candidly yet constructively across divides.
January further underlined this diplomatic intensity. Foreign ministers from across the West Asian region visited India, engaging in wide-ranging consultations. Around the same time, UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan travelled to New Delhi for substantive talks, reflecting the depth of ties between India and the United Arab Emirates. Energy security, investment flows, technology partnerships and regional stability were all on the table.
Now, as PM Modi heads to Israel—a country with which India shares strong defence, technology and innovation partnerships—the visit carries both symbolism and strategy. India has managed to maintain robust relations not just with Israel, but also with key Arab nations, including Jordan, Oman and the UAE. In a region defined by shifting alignments, that balancing act has enhanced India’s credibility.
Over the years, several West Asian nations have conferred honours and awards on the prime minister, signalling recognition of India’s growing influence. Government sources argue that this is not accidental, but the result of sustained engagement, strategic partnerships and a carefully calibrated foreign policy.
