Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the fifth edition of Semicon India 2026 on September 17, a mega-event that is set to bring together global semiconductor industry leaders, government officials, State representatives, and sector experts as India builds on the momentum of its growing semiconductor ecosystem.

The three-day event, to be held between September 17 and 19 in New Delhi, is being organised under the theme ‘Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem’, S Krishnan, Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) told reporters here.

“The event is proposed to be inaugurated by the PM on September 17, and we believe it will once again reiterate the commitment that the government has for the semiconductor sector,” he said.

The event comes at a time when India’s semiconductor push is gaining pace under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) and the Semicon India programme. The ISM is on second stage right now.

It is pertinent to mention that while 12 projects have been approved under ISM 1.0 -- three of which have already started commercial production and two/ three more are expected to follow suit by the calendar year-end -- the Cabinet has also recently approved the ISM 2.0, aimed at accelerating the development of a robust and resilient semiconductor ecosystem.

“The conference will have a roundtable which will be chaired by the PM, and that will take place a day before September 17, with global CEOs,” Amitesh Kumar Sinha, Additional Secretary, MeitY and CEO, ISM, informed at a curtain-raiser briefing.

However, both the senior officials of MeitY declined to disclose any prominent global CEOs who are expected at the event. The event is expected to see participation of countries including Japan, Korea, Singapore, Germany and the Netherlands.

The US, which has led international efforts on ‘Pax Silica’ for resilient supply chains in semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI) and critical minerals, is also expected to be present at the event.

During the AI Impact Summit in February this year, India formally joined the ‘Pax Silica’ coalition, marking a significant milestone in strengthening of strategic technology and supply chain cooperation between New Delhi and Washington.

The government is also supporting semiconductor research, innovation and design by providing design tools to more than 332 academic institutes and 105 startups.

Under the Design-Linked Incentive (DLI) scheme also, 24 startups have been approved to work on critical applications. These initiatives are aimed at developing a holistic semiconductor ecosystem in India and advancing the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, the MeitY said.

The details of Semicon India 2026 were announced by ISM, the MeitY and SEMI, the industry association promoting the semiconductor sector.

The event is expected to showcase developments across the semiconductor value chain as India seeks to cement its position in the global chip ecosystem.
