Three people were killed and at least four others injured after a gunman opened fire in a crowd at a food festival over the weekend - a 15-year-old has been arrested in connect to the incident

Police have arrested a 15-year-old over a shooting at a festival that killed three people.

The shooting took place near Seattle's Space Needle over the weekend.

At least four others sustained injuries at the crowded food festival, the city's mayor Katie Wilson said on Monday.

"Shortly after 6pm last night, officers responded to the sound of gunfire," she said. "They... were on scene within seconds and took one suspect into custody."

Ms Wilson said that it is believed two people exchanged gunfire outside the Seattle Center Armory.

A 19-year-old man, 44-year-old man and a 56-year-old woman lost their lives.

A 15-year-old was detained by police in connection with the shooting.

"We believe this teenager opened fire in the crowd but details are still under investigation," said Ms Wilson.

The search for a possible second suspect is ongoing. Faith Adia Hunter said she and her friends had just got food from a crepe vendor when gunfire broke out.

Ms Hunter realised a gunman was near them.

She and others found shelter in the nearby Seattle Children’s Museum.

“We were right next to him when it started so we took off running,” Ms Hunter said.

“So we took off running too into the building with the crowd.” Many vendors bolted towards the exits when the gunfire rang out, abandoning their food stands.

Hours afterwards, some milled outside the police tape, wondering when they would be allowed to return to collect their tents, food and cooking gear.

Roberto Ramirez, a vendor at the event, said he heard what sounded like firecrackers before people began yelling “shooter” and frantically running.

“Suddenly everything was empty,” he said. “People were freaked out.”
