Ahead of the Assembly election in Punjab, due in 2027, two legislators, one of whom was a former Minister of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), on Sunday (November 1, 2026) resigned from the party’s primary membership.
Chetan Singh Jouramajra from the Samana Assembly constituency and Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra from Sanour in Patiala district, said, they were quitting as the party has failed to fulfil its promises made during the 2022 Assembly polls.

At a press conference, both MLAs said various guarantees extended by the party regarding eradicating drugs, minimum support price on crops, better education and health in Punjab have not been fulfilled.
“In Punjab, people are continuously losing their lives to drug menace,” said Mr. Jouramajra, who was a Cabinet Minister and held portfolios including Health, among others.
Mr. Pathanmajra, meanwhile, is facing rape charges and a police case is registered against him in Punjab. He was granted regular bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Meanwhile, the AAP hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over its attempts to induct leaders who have left or been expelled by other parties. AAP’s Punjab Chief Spokesperson and MLA Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal said that while the AAP had consistently put Punjab’s interests first and taken action against its own ministers and MLAs over corruption, the BJP was attempting to bring in leaders facing serious allegations.

“The BJP in Punjab is no longer a political party but has become a scrap shop and has no support base in Punjab. They are collecting rejected leaders and discarded material from other parties, whether they are Congress leaders, or those surviving on the mercy of the Shiromani Akali Dal, or tainted faces expelled from the AAP,” he alleged.
