Born in 1940, Quince Duncan spent his first 15 years in Estrada de Matina, Limón. His relationship with literature began when his grandfather granted him access to a locked family library, a moment of curiosity that turned him into a lifelong reader and eventually one of Costa Rica’s primary literary voices

Literary Career & Landmark Works

Duncan began writing at age 14 and won first place in a national school composition contest. Over decades, his writings brought the memory, identity, and lived experiences of the Afro-Caribbean population into mainstream Costa Rican literature.
