Real Madrid cruised to a sixth straight win in all competitions as they easily saw off Racing Santander 3-0.

Madrid, having beaten Barcelona in the Clasico seven days ago, needed to maintain their excellent run to stay within three points of their arch rivals at the top of LaLiga.

And they went ahead in the 11th minute, albeit in controversial circumstances as Kylian Mbappe converted a penalty, awarded and then upheld by VAR after he went down in the area under seemingly minimal contact.

Jude Bellingham gave the hosts a mountain to climb 10 minutes later, with a stunning volley from Yan Diomande putting the game beyond doubt inside 36 minutes.

Arda Guler spurned a gilt-edged chance to open the scoring as he turned narrowly wide from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross, but moments later Mbappe broke the deadlock in contentious fashion, sending the goalkeeper the wrong after he went down with Matteo Prati the closest defender.

Replays suggested very little, if any, contact from Prati but the decision stood and Mbappe made no mistake from 12 yards.

Mbappe has now scored against all 24 LaLiga clubs he has faced since joining Madrid, and Jose Mourinho’s men ruthlessly made sure there was no way back for Racing.

Iker Luque forced the returning Thibaut Courtois into a fine save as Racing sought an instant reply, but their deficit was made more daunting as Guler sent the marauding Bellingham through on goal and the England star showed great composure in rounding Julen Agirrezabala and tucking home.

But the pick of Madrid’s goals came from Diomande, who left Agirrezabala with no chance as he rifled into the top-left corner from the edge of the area after Racing failed to clear a corner.

Agirrezabala prevented Guler from making it 4-0 before half-time, with his efforts in the remainder of the contest an exercise in damage limitation.

Mbappe crashed an effort against the post and then fired over the crossbar in quick succession just after the hour mark, before Racing appeared to have been handed a lifeline when the referee pointed to the spot for handball against Aurelien Tchouameni.

Yet that decision was overturned following a VAR check with Tchouameni’s arm deemed to be in a natural position as a bouncing cross struck him in the area.

There was no further scares for Madrid, who saw Bellingham denied a second by the offside flag before substitute Endrick curled wide in stoppage time. They were unable to make the scoreline more emphatic, but will hope their trips to AEK Athens in the Champions League and Valencia in their final LaLiga game before this month’s international break prove similarly comfortable.
