Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayLionsgate has confirmed the release date for John Rambo, the long-awaited prequel to the bloody, action-packed Rambo film series, which began in 1982 with First Blood, starring Sylvester Stallone and based on David Morrell’s 1972 book of the same title. The franchise charts the missions and life of John Rambo, a United States Army Special Forces veteran who is left traumatised from the Vietnam War yet utilises the intense military skills it handed him.
This prequel will be the sixth installment in the Rambo series, following Rambo: First Blood Part II in 1985, Rambo III in 1988, Rambo in 2008, with the last release being Rambo: Last Blood in 2019. It will be directed by Jalmari Helander, who will work from a script penned by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani. Noah Centineo will star as a younger version of Rambo in his origin story. David Harbour, Yao, and James Franco are also credited in the film.
The prequel was announced at the 2025 Cannes Film Market.
“I have been the biggest fan of Rambo since the age of 11. It is so surreal to be in a situation where I can actually make my own Rambo movie,” Helander previously stated. “The chain of events that got me here makes, in a fantastic way, my whole childhood make sense. I can’t wait to bring the greatest action hero back to the big screen where he belongs.”
As a whole, the Rambo film series has accumulated a total of $819,363,590 at the box office worldwide, with the combined budget of the five releases coming to $198 million and Rotten Tomatoes scores ranging from 86% to 26%. Previous directors working in the franchise include Ted Kotcheff, George P. Cosmatos, Peter MacDonald, Stallone, and Adrian Grünberg.
John Rambo is scheduled for a 4th June, 2027 release date.
