TODAY’S PICK — CENTRO CULTURE LOOP

A free Tuesday of art and science across Praça Mauá and beyond

Start at the Museu de Arte do Rio (MAR) near Praça Mauá. It is open 11 am to 6 pm and entry is free on Tuesdays. The permanent collection walks you through Rio’s visual history from the colonial port to the modern periphery, with a strong photography section on the third floor.

Afterwards, walk two minutes east to the Museu do Amanhã, open Thursday to Tuesday, 10 am to 6 pm. Tickets are R$30 full or R$15 half. The main exhibit — a 360‑degree projection room by Santiago Calatrava — probes five possible futures for the planet. Spend 90 minutes here; the air conditioning alone is worth the fare on a warm afternoon.

For lunch, cross the VLT tracks to Xepa (Rua do Mercado) for a R$45 executive plate of grilled fish with plantain purée. Or grab a pão de queijo and cold mate at the Museu do Amanhã café overlooking the bay.

CCBB is closed today — its regular Tuesday rest day. Plan that visit for Wednesday through Monday, 9 am to 8 pm. The Municipal Theatre guided visits are also closed Tuesday; they resume Wednesday at noon.

Take the VLT from Santos Dumont airport stop to Parada dos Museus. A single‑journey Metro or VLT ticket costs R$7.90. You can use the same card on both systems.

Jardim Botânico opens every day at 8 am. Entry is R$40 for residents and R$80 for foreigners. The bromeliad house and the Amazon section are at their driest and most comfortable in the August sun.

From the garden’s north exit, walk 10 minutes to Parque Lage, open daily until 5 pm with free entry. The courtyard café does a solid Brazilian breakfast until noon — pão na chapa with requeijão for R$18.

The Christ the Redeemer trail starts from Parque Lage. It takes about 90 minutes up, and you must register at the park gate. Only start before 2 pm to descend well before sunset.

COFFEE & WHERE TO WORK — BOTAFOGO & FLAMENGO

Fast wifi and flat whites in the Zona Sul’s most laptop‑friendly corners

Curto Café on Rua Paulo Barreto in Botafogo roasts its own beans and has a long central table with power sockets on each leg. It is open from 8 am to 8 pm. A V60 pour‑over runs R$14 and the wifi is fast enough for Zoom calls.

In Flamengo, Brewteco on Rua Marquês de Abrantes is quieter on weekday mornings. It opens at 10 am and offers a R$25 day‑pass that includes bottomless house coffee. The upstairs mezzanine is cooler and gets fewer phone‑call neighbours.

THE CONTRASTING PLAY — PRAINHA & RECREIO

Leave the Zona Sul grid and take a car to the wild beach strip

Prainha is a protected surf beach 40 minutes west of Ipanema. Waves are running chest‑to‑head‑high and the red flags are up at the left‑hand rocks, but the central stretch is safe for intermediate surfers. The water is a bracing 21°C. Park for R$15 at the official lot.

After a swim, drive back 10 minutes to Recreio dos Bandeirantes and eat grilled halloumi and octopus skewers at Bar do Bira, where a plate for two costs about R$80.

This is the call if you want to escape the Tuesday stillness of Centro and feel the full Atlantic horizon. Leave by 9 am to grab a good spot before the lifeguards set the morning flags.

TONIGHT, AFTER 7 PM

Live samba in Lapa, sunset beers in Botafogo, and a cinema in Leblon

Sunset is at 5:35 pm, so the post‑beach golden hour is brief. Head to Boteco Boa Praça on Rua Dias Ferreira in Leblon for a R$18 chopp and a plate of pastéis that draws a mixed expat‑carioca crowd until about 8 pm.

In Lapa, Bar Semente on Rua Evaristo da Veiga opens at 7 pm and hosts a roda de samba from 8:30 pm. Entry is free before 9 pm, then R$20. The Tuesday session draws serious musicians; get there early for a stool at the bar.

For a quieter night, Estação Net Ipanema on Rua Visconde de Pirajá screens the new Glauber Rocha retrospective at 7:15 pm. Tickets are R$26, half-price on Tuesdays. The cinema has reclining leather seats and a solid air‑conditioning system.

SUN 9 — Bright and 28°C. Ciclovia on the seafront closes Avenida Atlântica to cars. Prainha will be busy by 9 am. Maracanã may host a late‑afternoon fixture.

Yes, the VLT is safe and well‑lit on a Tuesday. It runs roughly every 7 minutes. Tap your RioCard or contactless card at the platform reader before boarding. Ticket checks are random but the fine for riding without a validated card is R$170.

The Parada dos Museus stop puts you directly between MAR and Museu do Amanhã. The area is patrolled by both municipal guards and private museum security until at least 7 pm.

You need Brazilian reais (BRL) for almost everything. Beach kiosks, coffee shops, and museums do not accept foreign currency. Cards are widely accepted, and Pix — Brazil’s instant payment system — works at most mid‑range restaurants and bars.

If you carry cash, change it at a bank‑affiliated exchange house. ATMs inside Bradesco and Santander branches in Copacabana and Leblon dispense reais at the commercial rate. The ATM at Galeão airport gives a worse rate.
