Bharatiya Janata Party workers, leaders, and supporters celebrated across West Bengal on Tuesday (May 5, 2026) after the saffron party crafted a historic landslide victory in State elections. There were celebrations across government offices too.
Bikes and cars decked in saffron and bearing BJP flags took part in rallies across the State. BJP supporters raised Jai Shri Ram slogans outside the homes of both Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee in the Kalighat area. A massive crowd of BJP workers had gathered outside Mr. Banerjee’s office on Monday (April 4).
From fireworks to biriyani, and saffron gulal (colour), the celebrations had many faces in the State over the last two days. Overnight, many autorickshaw unions in the State switched loyalties from the Trinamool Congress to the BJP.

As the saffron wave took over, government office workers in the State Secretariat in Nabanna were seen celebrating and chanting Jai Shri Ram. Similar celebrations were also reported from other State Government offices.
“With the new government coming to power, we have brought an end to the 15-years of abuse by the previous government. Punishment postings, transfers, and denial of Dearness Allowance will now hopefully come to an end. This is an organic outpouring of happiness,” a BJP supporter inside Nabanna told reporters.

Many also stated that they lived and worked with a sense of fear and are now freed of that feeling.
Revellers were also seen at the BJP’s Salt Lake office where Suvendu Adhikari, who defeated Mamata Banerjee in her home bastion of Bhabanipur, was feted by party workers. Many other BJP winners also joined Mr. Adhikari in celebrations. Dilip Ghosh who won from Kharagpur Sadar, State President Samik Bhattacharya, and MP Sukanta Majumdar also joined the festivities.

Secretariat will return to Writers’ Building
The BJP is to shift the Secretariat back to the historic Writers’ Building which was abandoned by the TMC government under Mamata Banerjee in 2013, two years after assuming power. Ms. Banerjee shifted her administration to Nabanna, a building outside of Kolkata, in Hooghly.

BJP State President Samik Bhattacharya said that they have always wanted to run the government from the Writers’ Building.
The Writer’s Building has historically served as the administrative building for many State governments.
The massive red brick British structure in the heart of central Kolkata’s Dalhousie area has seen the rise and fall of many administrations and was near empty for 13 years, as maintenance was carried out.
The Public Works Department has been roped in to restore the Writers’ Building. According to reports, at least 28 rooms will be refurbished for the new Chief Minister and other Cabinet Ministers.
