Samuel West appeared tearful as he opened up about his final conversation with his late mum Prunella Scales.
Fawlty Towers star Prunella died in October 2025 at the age of 93. The actress, known for playing Sybil Fawlty in the classic comedy, had been diagnosed with vascular dementia in 2013.
All Creatures Great and Small star Samuel was out filming for his Channel 5 show Sam & Ade Go Birding days later, and became emotional as he talked to Adrian Edmondson about his mother. As the keen birdwatchers sat in a car waiting for a sighting, Samuel shared: "Since we last met my mum died. A week ago."
He added that Prunella died one day after what would have been her 62nd wedding anniversary. Samuel's dad was Brass actor Timothy West, who died in 2024 at the age of 90.
"Last week we went down to Shaftesbury Avenue to see the West End theatres dim their front of house lights," he shared.
"Which is something which would have astonished and delighted her, but it really floored me."
The actor went on: "The last proper conversation I had with her was when a couple of years ago she said, 'How old am I?' And I said, 'You are 91 now.' And she said, '91? (expletive)'."
"It was beautifully timed, beautifully enunciated," he added as Adrian laughed.
"I mean, we had a few more conversations after that, but that may be the last one I remember."
"Well, that's good to have in the memory," Adrian remarked. "Yeah, it's a goodie, it's a goodie," Samuel said. "And I certainly got my love of the outdoors from her."
The episode saw the pair visit the Holkham Estate on the north Norfolk coast.
Samuel told Adrian that filming the instalment marked "the first time I've been out since my mum died a week ago".
"I'm glad you did it," his friend and co-star replied.
"So am I," said the actor. "I I would never I would never have cancelled, but I wouldn't have expected it to be so freeing. And, she very much believed that the show must go on."
Sam & Ade Go Birding airs on Channel 5.
