ensex Today, Nifty 50 | Stock Market Live Updates: Indian shares fell on Monday, led by private lenders after quarterly earnings pointed to pressure on net interest margins, while escalating conflict in the Middle East dampened sentiment further.
The benchmark Nifty 50 fell 0.39% to 24,238.5, while the BSE Sensex shed 0.57% to 77,708.52.
HDFC Bank, India’s largest private lender, fell 5.1%, its steepest drop in four months after in-line June-quarter profit was overshadowed by a sharper-than-expected drop in net interest margin.
Kotak Mahindra Bank and Axis Bank also fell 2% and 5.5%, respectively.
The three lenders were the biggest contributors to the benchmark Nifty 50’s losses, and overshadowed ICICI Bank’s 1.1% rise on better-than-expected earnings. Private sector banks and financials fell 2.3% and 1.2%, respectively.
Reliance Industries was relatively muted despite beating the average first-quarter profit view on strength in its oil-to-chemicals and telecom verticals. The stock had jumped 2.4% ahead of the earnings on Friday.
Eleven of the 16 major sectors logged gains on Monday. The broader small-caps and mid-caps rose 0.2% and 0.6%, respectively.
Among stocks, ONGC gained 0.9% and Oil India jumped 4.2%, as higher crude prices boosted sentiment toward upstream producers by improving realisations and profitability.

Equirus Securities | Key Highlights – Banks Mid-quarter Review
* Mixed NIM trends: Quarter-on-quarter NIMs expanded across mid-sized private and state-owned banks, while large private banks (excluding ICICI Bank) reported a mid-teen basis point decline, mainly due to changes in loan mix with faster corporate loan growth and spread compression. Cost of funds remained broadly stable despite moderation in CASA ratios, while asset quality stayed stable.
* Retains positive ratings; Axis Bank top pick: Equirus retained its LONG ratings on Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Federal Bank and RBL Bank. Among large private banks, its preferred pecking order remains Axis Bank > HDFC Bank > ICICI Bank, with Axis Bank continuing to be its top pick.
* Corporate loans drove credit growth: Sequential credit growth was led by corporate lending, supported by higher working capital demand, a shift from bond market borrowings to bank loans and a modest pickup in business-as-usual (BAU) capex. Axis Bank, HDFC Bank and YES Bank also indicated improvement in retail disbursements.
* Sector enters 2QFY27 on a strong footing: Asset quality and capital remain strong, while deposit costs appear close to bottoming. The key debate is the trajectory of NIM recovery in the second half of FY27, the durability of retail and unsecured loan growth, and whether corporate capex inflects sufficiently to sustain the current loan-growth momentum.
* Earnings estimate changes: Equirus raised FY27 earnings estimates for ICICI Bank (+3%) and Federal Bank (+2%), while lowering estimates for HDFC Bank (-3%) and Axis Bank (-3%).

Sensex, Nifty open lower as banking stocks drag; crude spike rattles market
- July 20, 2026 09:27
Commodities Commentary | Manav Modi, Commodities Analyst, Motilal Oswal Financial services
Gold prices traded lower, hovering around the key $4,000 mark as escalating U.S.-Iran hostilities lifted crude oil prices and renewed concerns that higher energy costs could keep inflation elevated, reinforcing expectations that the Fed may maintain a restrictive monetary policy for longer. Brent crude climbed above $90 after fresh military escalation in the Middle East, including attacks on a key oil facility in Kuwait and strikes on vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, raising fears of prolonged supply disruptions.
Although recent U.S. inflation and labour market data have pointed to easing price pressures, investors remained focused on whether higher oil prices could complicate the Fed’s inflation fight and delay policy easing. Higher-for-longer interest rate expectations continued to support the U.S. dollar and Treasury yields, reducing the appeal of non-yielding assets such as gold.
Market pricing for a July Fed rate hike briefly rose following the latest geopolitical escalation before easing back, while expectations still remain that the Fed will keep rates unchanged this year unless higher energy prices trigger broader inflationary pressures.
Meanwhile, the PBoC left its benchmark Loan Prime Rates unchanged, as expected. Investors will now closely monitor preliminary manufacturing and services PMI data from major economies along with the European Central Bank’s policy decision later this week for further direction on the global economic and interest rate outlook.

Expert Take | On Market & FII flows by Vinit Bolinjkar - Head of Research- Ventura
The current trading week witnessed a strong institutional divergence, with foreign outflows being effectively absorbed by robust domestic participation. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) recorded a net outflow of ₹8,743.35 crore, while Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) remained strong buyers with net inflows of ₹8,790.75 crore. Supported by resilient domestic liquidity, the NSE Nifty 50 closed the week at 24,334.30. Global cues remained mixed, with geopolitical developments keeping crude prices elevated, as Brent crude stood at $81.67 per barrel, while the USD/INR remained at 96.24. Despite near-term global uncertainties, sustained domestic institutional support, stable macro fundamentals, and improving earnings visibility continue to provide structural resilience to Indian equities as markets focus on upcoming corporate results.

Expert Take | Cryptocurrency | Analysis by Vikram Subburaj, CEO, Giottus.com
Bitcoin’s return to about $64,600 on July 20 marks a recovery from the sub-$58,000 levels seen earlier in the month. However, it does not yet amount to a decisive change in market direction. The price has spent 307 days within the broad $60,000-$70,000 range. The latest rebound remains another move inside that structure until buyers overcome the supply above $65,000.
The recovery nevertheless rests on firmer ground than the headline price suggests because nearly 6% of Bitcoin’s circulating supply last moved between $58,000 and $64,000. This concentration creates a large base of holders whose acquisition costs are close to the current market price of $64,600. This reduced the likelihood of indiscriminate selling at the first sign of weakness.
The same cost base also explains why the advance could slow near $65,000-$68,000. Investors who endured the fall below $58,000 may use the recovery to reduce exposure without booking a large loss. This leaves Bitcoin caught between improving support below $64,000 and insufficient conviction above $65,500.
ETF flows illustrate this tension more clearly than the price chart because the $424.7 million withdrawal on July 13 was followed by 4 consecutive sessions of inflows. The turnaround brought in $500.2 million between July 14 and July 17. This helped Bitcoin recover after softer US inflation data encouraged investors to return to risk assets.
The quality of those flows, however, remains uneven because BlackRock’s IBIT received $136.5 million on July 17 while Fidelity’s FBTC lost $4.2 million. July’s available sessions produced a net inflow of only $200.4 million through July 17, showing that the strong final 4 days largely repaired damage from earlier withdrawals.
Our advice: For investors, $62,800 and $65,500 now define the immediate decision area rather than offering automatic entry or exit signals. A sustained close above $65,500, supported by ETF inflows above $100 million a day, would improve the case for a move towards $68,000 and eventually $70,000. A fall below the $62,873 long-term average would weaken the recovery and place $60,000 at risk, with the deeper cost-basis support near $58,000 becoming relevant again.

1QFY27 core EBITDA (excl. telecom and others) was broadly in line with expectations.
Key takeaways:
(1) O2C (oil to chemical) likely fared better than market expectations, growing +17% QoQ despite the drag of elevated crude premiums and logistics cost (freight/insurance), fuel marketing under-recoveries, refined product windfall taxes and planned turnaround of key refinery processing units
Outlook is looking more constructive into 2Q
(2) Retail segment faces EBITDA margin compression (down 80bps YoY) driven by higher investments in digital commerce & hyperlocal delivery infrastructure
(3) In new energy, company is getting closer to commissioning fully integrated solar PV & battery manufacturing plant
FMCG and media continued their strong growth momentum.
Reliance guided for a doubling of retail Ebitda over three years despite indicating subdued growth this fiscal year
Ramp-up of new energy capacity, continued strength in O2C, rising growth in retail KPIs and the recognition of value in media plus FMCG are clear triggers.
Recovery in RRVL’s revenue and profitability, along with a roadmap for scaling up RIL’s new businesses (FMCG, New Energy, AI & Datacentre), remains

Rupee set to weaken as brent crude surges above $90
The Indian rupee is expected to come under pressure at Monday’s open after oil prices extended their rally, with Brent crude rising above $90 per barrel on an escalation of hostilities between the U.S. and Iran in the Middle East.
The rupee is expected to slip past 96.50 per U.S. dollar at open, traders said, after settling at 96.28 on Friday.
The currency has fallen 1.7% this month, weighed by a renewed rally in oil prices, and is now within striking distance of its all-time low of 96.96 touched in May.

Sensex, Nifty may open a tad lower on renewed US-Iran tensions; earnings in focus
Indian shares are expected to open slightly lower on Monday as rising oil prices, driven by escalating conflict in the Middle East, offset better-than-expected earnings from heavyweights Reliance Industries and ICICI Bank.
GIFT Nifty futures GIFc1 were trading at 24,297.5 as of 7:59 a.m. IST, indicating the Nifty 50 could open slightly below Friday’s close of 24,334.3.
U.S. forces struck Iran for a ninth consecutive day as the number of confirmed American military deaths in the renewed fighting rose to three and concerns grew over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Brent crude futures jumped 2.5% to top $90 per barrel for the first time in over a month, adding to concerns for import-dependent economies such as India.
At home, the focus will be on earnings after India’s top four private banks and oil-to-telecom conglomerate Reliance Industries reported their quarterly results after market hours on Friday and over the weekend.

Punjab & Sind Bank Reports 23% Jump in Q1 FY27 Net Profit
For the quarter ended June 30, 2026, the Punjab & Sind Bank’s total income expanded by 4.91% year-on-year, scaling to ₹3,545 crore against the ₹3,379.09 crore recorded in the corresponding quarter of the previous fiscal year. A primary catalyst for this top-line acceleration was the core Net Interest Income (NII), which logged a healthy year-on-year growth of 15.33%, climbing to ₹1,038 crore from ₹900 crore in Q1 FY26. This improvement in core income directly translated into stronger baseline earnings. More notably, net profit for the three-month period surged by 23.05% year-on-year, finishing at ₹331 crore compared to the ₹269 crore achieved in the previous year’s parallel quarter.
