Uttarakhand continues to face monsoon havoc, with the lives of people in several districts massively affected due to landslides, flash floods and cloudburst incidents. In the most recent incident, the state’s Chamoli district was struck by a cloudburst late Wednesday.
At least seven people are missing, and two have been rescued, as the disaster completely destroyed many homes, fields, and barns. According to the local administration, debris brought by heavy rains in the Kuntri Langafali ward of the Nandanagar Nagar Panchayat completely destroyed six houses.
Videos shared online show muddy floodwater and debris flowing through narrow lanes between houses.
The walls and rooftops of the houses can be seen splattered with mud, and heavy water currents entering the houses are causing damage to the properties.
Speaking to ANI, Chamoli District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari said, “A cloudburst caused damage in the Nandanagar Ghat area of Chamoli district on Wednesday night. Six houses were buried under debris in the Kuntri Langafali ward of Nandanagar. The District Magistrate said seven people are missing, while two have been rescued. Relief and rescue operations are underway."
On receiving the information about the cloudburst, rescue teams immediately reached the spot and started the operation.
In a separate incident on Tuesday, a cloudburst incident in Dehradun claimed 21 lives, and 17 missing.
As the situation across Uttarakhand remain tense, as many as 2,500 tourists in Mussoorie were stranded as the road from Dehradun to the popular hill station remained closed for the second consecutive day following cloudbursts and heavy rain in the capital.
The Dehradun-Mussoorie route was breached at several points, prompting police to appeal to tourists and visitors to stay wherever they were — whether in hotels, homes or homestays — till the road was restored.
“Debris has been partially cleared from two points along the route, but installation of an alternative bridge at Kolhukhet may take a little more time," a police officer in Mussoorie said.
