Sauteing cabbage "adds a special flavour and texture" that you can't achieve with steaming or boiling–and it's all down to one "secret ingredient"

Cabbage is a versatile veggie that pairs well with a variety of main courses, from sausage and potato traybakes to chicken roast dinners. However, Laura Fuentes' simple sautéed cabbage recipe, which includes one "secret ingredient," could change their minds.

The food and nutrition expert revealed: "This easy recipe for sauteed cabbage shows you how to turn this simple veggie into a delicious caramelised simple side dish."

Sautéing cabbage "adds a special flavour and texture" that can't be achieved through steaming or boiling. But to "make great cabbage", there's a secret ingredient you need: vinegar.

Laura elaborated: "A dash of vinegar enhances the cabbage's flavour in a way that reduces the need for added fats, like butter. You don't need much either, just half a tablespoon."

When it comes to the type of vinegar to use when cooking cabbage, Laura prefers white wine and rice vinegar, but apple cider vinegar is also an option, reports the Express.

How to make cabbage taste better

Ingredients

  • One tablespoon of olive oil
  • Two cloves of garlic, minced
  • One head of cabbage, finely shredded
  • One teaspoon of salt
  • A quarter teaspoon of black pepper
  • Half a tablespoon of white wine vinegar, or any preferred vinegar

Method

In a large pan, start by heating the oil over medium heat. Add the garlic and brown for one minute.

Next, add the cabbage and cook for three minutes. Season with salt and black pepper and give it a mix.

Leave the cabbage to cook for an additional five minutes or until the cabbage is tender and cooked down. You’ll know the cabbage is just right when you see tender bits of browned cabbage scattered throughout the pan.

For the last step, pour in the vinegar, and saute for one minute before serving with your meal.

The recipe has received glowing reviews on the food blog's comment section. Pammy gushed, "Loving cabbage right now, this recipe was great!"

Lisa commended: "Wonderful side dish and so easy! Will be a keeper for sure."

Judy added her voice, "This was super simple and went great with dinner tonight!"

Holly confessed: "I have never been the biggest fan of cabbage, but I gave this sauteed cabbage a try and I am now a fan! So delicious and easy to make!"

Christine even put her own spin on the recipe. She disclosed, "I sprinkled bacon bits on the finished dish and accompanied it with loaded baked potato pierogies."
