So, I watched The Legend of Bagger Vance for like the 349^th time a couple of nights ago.

Aside from thoroughly enjoying Charlize Theron’s performance and being quietly amused by the fact that Walter Hagen was played by the same guy who played D-Day in Animal House, I gotta say I loved the old-school waxed canvas golf bags.

Does that make me a little weird?

Hold your answers to the end, folks. We have work to do first.

Anyhow, imagine my joy with Sun Mountain’s announcement that it’s adding a waxed canvas stand bag to its everyday offering. It’s called the TQR Waxed Canvas bag and I don’t care if it does cost $450 and weighs nearly six pounds. I’m just glad I’m living in a world where someone cares enough to make one and is willing to take my money for it.

Let’s dive in.

What’s so great about a waxed canvas golf bag?

History, my friends. And heritage.

Oh, yes, and aesthetics.

Back before synthetic leather, back before nylon and polyester, and back before kangaroo leather, you had waxed canvas golf bags. Waxed canvas goes way back in history. Explorers, outdoorsmen and the military all used wax canvas gear simply because it shed rain better than untreated fabric while maintaining a high degree of durability.

It was the material of choice for golf bags dating back to the turn of the century. Don’t believe me? Go watch The Greatest Game Ever Played (321 views and counting) and get back to us.

Anyway, the idea behind this new Sun Mountain TQR Waxed Canvas stand bag is to intentionally evoke that era. This isn’t the lightest or the most technologically advanced golf bag you can buy but it will, for the golfer who cares, help connect the modern game to its traditional roots.

Hey, if you’re not that romantic, then it’s just a cool-looking golf bag that’s going to last a long time.

TQR? What does that mean?

TQR, according to Sun Mountain, stands for Trust, Quality and Reliability. The company says that’s been part of its DNA since Rick Reimers first founded Sun Mountain in 1981.

Yeah, it’s hokey. But, really, what’s in a name?

Sun Mountain actually proved the waxed canvas concept’s commercial viability earlier this year when it released the limited-edition Hometown USA stand bag. That waxed canvas beauty was designed to celebrate the U.S.A.’s 250^th anniversary.

The new TQR is built off that platform. It features an eight inch, four-way top with four full-length club dividers and seven pockets. Those include a full apparel pocket and two “fur”-lined compartments for valuables and your rangefinder. The bag also features Sun Mountain’s Dual-Strap system to distribute weight evenly across your shoulders (critical for a 5.8-pound bag). If you’re more of a single-strap type of person, Sun Mountain offers one of those as an option.

Waxed canvas naturally sheds rain, dew and dirt. While not technically waterproof, it is water resistant. Additionally, and this is the part that waxed canvas fans swoon over, it will develop a natural patina over time.

“No two waxed canvas bags develop the same way,” says Marketing and Brand Strategy Director Grant Lordan. “Each takes on its own character over time while offering the functionality golfers expect from a Sun Mountain stand bag.”

Each bag will develop unique creases, wear patterns and light and dark patches with use, all while maintaining its durability. Fans will say it’s like breaking in a leather jacket.

Yeah, but c’mon, $450? And six freakin’ pounds?

We’ve discussed pricing on these pages before so we won’t belabor the point. Niche products come at niche pricing and I wouldn’t bet against Sun Mountain selling enough of these bags to make it worth their while. In case you’re worried, we did check the Sun Mountain website this morning. They still have plenty of golf bags priced well below the TQR.

As for the weight, well, that’s a fair issue. For hardcore carriers, 5.8 pounds might be a bridge too far. At that weight, the balance becomes more critical. A well-balanced six-pound bag can actually be an easier carry than a poorly balanced one that’s considerably lighter.

On the other hand, if you really like the bag, there’s nothing stopping you from putting it on a push cart, electric trolley or full-sized golf cart. No one’s going to call a cop.

Hell, you can even suck it up and carry it if you really want to.

The irony, of course, is that a heavier stand bag is in contrast to Sun Mountain’s reputation. The company got its start in 1981 when Reimer wanted to create a lighter alternative to the heavy leather bags of the day. Reimer sold Sun Mountain to a private equity firm in 2022 and that firm has invested in expanding Sun Mountain’s market influence.

Along with its lightweight bags, push carts, rainwear and travel bags, the company is branching into special limited-edition offerings. The aforementioned Hometown USA bag is one example. The unique collaboration with baseball bat maker Marucci is another. That was a stand bag made from Japanese baseball glove leather. It was different, stunning and sold for $2,000.

I’m sure by now you know how I feel about this bag. What can I say? I’m a sucker for the whole heritage/nostalgia subculture in golf. Remember, this is the guy who writes History’s Mysteries, not to mention “This Week In Golf History” for the MGS Newsletter.

So, if you’re a fellow golf history dork, you might find yourself drawn to this type of bag. It’s extremely low maintenance, requiring only a basic cleaning after a round and maybe a rewax every two or three years. And it may be the only golf bag you can buy that looks cool out of the box and will look better with age, rather than worse.

If you’re not a history dork, well, my condolences. As the late, great Jimmy Buffett used to say, “Breathe in, breathe out, move on.”
