We have reached the close of play for day four
That's where I'm going to leave things for tonight. I think it's safe to say we won't have any more deals dropping this evening.
Just the one official move today, that being Rowan Marshall's trade to Geelong, but there was a bit of movement in the Nick Blakey sweepstakes.
Tomorrow looms as a pretty big day in that regard. You'd expect Blakey will decide which team he wants to play for.
Free agency paperwork also needs to be lodged by 5pm tomorrow, so it'll be interesting to see what happens with Zak Butters.
I'll be back opening the play tomorrow, Dean and I have switched ends, and he wants a crack with the old ball.
Thank you for joining us once again and I'll chat to you all tomorrow!

Stay at the bottom of the ladder and Bob's your uncle!
I'm riled, I'm livid, I'm out! West Coast Beagles have done it again: recruited players over 30 with injury issues. To all those suckers who show up at Perth Stadium and live in hope of a club recovery: forget it, this club has become Western Australia's version of St Kilda and North Melbourne.
- Uncle Bob
More absolute West Coast melts as we wind things up for today.

What is the mega deal? Why will it not be ticked off?
Chris in simple terms, what is comprising of the said 'mega-deal' currently? It's hard to find a succinct list. Furthermore, why wouldn't it be approved?
- Calamardo G
The exact details of the mega deal aren't known beyond what I shared earlier from Cal Twomey.
In terms of why the AFL might not tick it off, the league wants every deal to be able to stand on its own merit.
So the mega deal can't be seen as just a means of the Bulldogs sending more assets to Port for Zak Butters because Port deems the compensation pick not enough.
All of that is to say that it appears no certainty at the time of writing that Port will go the compensation pick route.
That is good news for the other teams picking inside the top 10.

Oh boy, the LWs are beefing in the comments
I do not agree with the other lw at all! It’s amazing how much you’ve written without actually understanding what a rebuild looks like. You don’t fix a struggling list by throwing 18-year-olds onto the field and hoping for the best. You need experience, leadership and young talent developing together. Writing off trades before they’ve even played a game says more about your bias than the club’s decisions. And criticising a supporter base for turning up through the toughest years? That’s embarrassing. Four premierships in under 40 years isn’t clinging to the past, it’s a history most clubs would kill for. Rebuilds take time. Thankfully, opinions like yours have no influence on them.
- Luke w
A few years ago, we had the West Coast-Freo turf war in the comments.
This year, it's the two LWs going at it.

The mega deal is on life support
Tom Morris seems to think the reported mega deal involving as many as six clubs might fall through.

LW isn't happy with how West Coast is being run
The collapse of the West Coast Eagles deserves to be studied. Much of it comes down to poor drafting, poor trading and a club that doesn't know where it sits. Then there is the decision to run out through an inflatable chicken instead of a banner, and supporters at games who bring seat pads and tell you to stop cheering because it's too loud. Like much of the supporter base, the club clings to the past. Trading for players who are no longer in another team's best 22 but were once good is their specialty, and the Viney and Rivers deals are further examples of that ineptitude. The only picks they have hit on are Reid and Duursma, and they were lucky to hold the number 1 pick in those drafts. In an even draft they would have missed and taken a spud. If I were them, I'd hoard every pick I could and hit the draft before Tassie enters the competition. They need to be a lot better next year or Reid will see the light and walk out the door.
- LW
It certainly has been a dour few years for the Eagles, LW.
For me, it is a couple of trade down options that have left a little bit to be desired.
In 2022, they moved out of Harry Sheezel and George Wardlaw range to drop down and drafted Reuben Ginbey, who to be fair, is a very solid defender.
Then of course we had the now-infamous 2024 trade down which saw them essentially give up the rights to draft Jagga Smith in a deal with Carlton.
They made the right call in holding firm and drafting Harley Reid and Willem Duursma, I just think they should've done more of that than galaxy-braining it by trading down.
I'm just not a believer in trading down in drafts in general. You stay where you are and grab the elite talent, future assets be damned, but that's just me.

Matthew has a mega trade conspiracy theory
Does the classic mega trade announcements each year have more to do keeping ppl engaged to the ad festival that is trade radio than fact? Trade period can be boring plod along but we all listen in hope our club lands that dish but come middle of it all each time when it is waning a tad watch out mega trade

Melbourne's opening bid for McLachlan revealed
Melbourne has reportedly offered its pick 47 to Brisbane for Will McLachlan after his trade request, per AFL.com.au.
Brisbane is yet to respond to the offer, but expected to ask the Demons for more.
Melbourne has picks 6, 10, 47 and 87 in this year's draft.
I wonder whether a future pick breaks this one open.

How does Sam Marshall get to St Kilda?
Is the sam marshall deal looking alot tougher or easier after rowan marshall got to gelong. Surely the saints cant use pick 14 for marshall. Has a bright future the young fella but not pick 14 worth. Do they have any 2nd and 3rd rounders this year or next year brisbane would actuallt want
- Christian
I think the Saints are going to have to do some wheeling and dealing to get Sam Marshall across.
They've currently got picks 8, 14, 49, 67 and 85 in this year's draft.
Pick 49 is too low and picks 8 and 14 are too high.
I wonder whether they look to split one of 8 or 14 in order to acquire some picks in the 20s.
Would they trade 8 to Essendon for 15 and 25 and then send 25 to Brisbane for Marshall?

More insight on the reported mega deal comes to light
AFL.com.au's Cal Twomey has offered an insight on the reported mega deal that could involve up to seven clubs.
Twomey notes Port Adelaide, Western Bulldogs, Melbourne, Richmond, Carlton, Hawthorn and North Melbourne as the teams involved.
The deal would allow Carlton's Hudson O'Keeffe and Hawthorn's Finn Maginness to get to the Dogs, both having requested trades.
Twomey adds that if this deal is not ticked off by the AFL, then Port is expected to match the Bulldogs offer for Zak Butters and will work on a deal centred around the Dogs, rather than other clubs.

Blakey reportedly set for St Kilda talks tonight
AFL.com.au's Cal Twomey is reporting that Nick Blakey is set to meet St Kilda brass as he looks for an exit from the Swans.
That leaves Essendon as the only other reported and interested team he is yet to meet.
Blakey is also understood to have spoken to Geelong this week.

Could the Kangaroos keep pick 5 in a Blakey deal?
Hypothetically, do you think North would be able to get Nick Blakey without using it's Pick 5 this year, as it's tied to a late 1st round compo pick? Maybe 2x Future 1sts (2027,2028) and a 2nd rounder this year?
- Norf Tragic
I think it would be tough to appease Sydney in a trade without sending pick 5 their way.
If you're not sending that pick, you'd have to part ways with a good young player, and I'm not sure exactly who that would be.
The Swans would probably want someone like Finn O'Sullivan or George Wardlaw in that deal, and I don't think the Kangaroos would do that.
The picks route seems the easiest path to getting a deal done.

Will Port be forcing a Butters trade?
Is it fair to assume that port definitely will be forcing a trade for Butters now?
- O.M
The Butters stuff has been confusing all along for me.
It appears that they're likely to accept the compensation pick (which would be No.5) as that alone is better than any single asset the Bulldogs can offer.
But then there also seems to be an understanding that the Bulldogs will send some more stuff to the Power in a separate deal.
I'm not quite sure how that wink-wink business works and how the AFL seems comfortable enough ticking it off, but here we are.

Will the Pies be at the front of the line for Rowell?
Hi guys, hope your afternoon is going well. Collingwood are always linked to superstars names year after year, always seems to be the same story, in another club taking them. Seemed like they were all in on butters until he chose the doggies. Suprised they got Lachie Neale done. Is it possible next year we go hard at Rowell, as he is out of contract, best mates with daicos. Or will Collingwood not have the cap space?
- Jeremy
Matt Rowell is out of contract at the end of next year, and has so far given no indications where he'll sign.
Collingwood will definitely have been managing its cap in a way that keeps some space for Rowell next summer, should he look to leave the Suns for a Victorian club.
Of all the "big" Victorian clubs, Collingwood appears to be the one that is best set right now, so it's no surprise that big-name players want to play there.

What is happening with Beau McCreery?
Is beau mccreery on the move?
- Rachel
There was certainly some reported Tasmanian interest in Beau McCreery, but he doesn't appear to be on the move this summer.
He comes out of contract next year and might well be one of the players Tasmania trades one of its first-rounders for then.

Where is the Jack Bowes photoshoot?
Thank you for the blog. Can we please see some photos of our newest trades donning the sash so as to boost our spirits and focus on new talent and growth rather than seeing (and hearing from) our departed players in other colors? Roll on 2027!
- Michelle Go Bombers!
I think Jack Bowes is still overseas, Michelle, just going off the background of his video to Bombers fans which was released by the club yesterday.
I'm sure as soon as he's home, they'll have him down at the Hangar sporting your red and black!

How do the Cats possibly land Nick Blakey now?
Blakey would be an ideal Cat recruit. Their whole game plan is based on extremely quick defenders running before the opposition has time to set up and defend. And whilst the claims are shocking would love every player to come out and tell us of the times their mum wouldn’t have approved. The Sydney problems are they got caught
- David
Just a thought on the possibilty of Blakey to geelong. Just wondering would geelong be able to handle the publcity regarding everything that has occured over the past weeks and balance out the midfeild group with the quality of the players that we currently have.
- James
Could geelong trade payers to get blakey
- RO
Geelong gave up more for Marshall than they likely anticipated but knew there was no way they could get a Blakey deal done. The ones they have now picked up have been targeted and strategic as always. Unlike St.Kilda for the last 1560 years
- Knuckle
If Blakey chooses the cats and they need draft capital, does Humphries to Freo become a live option?
- JM
Re. the salary cap discussion - it seems SDK is out of favour, could go the same way as Jack Bowes in return for a decent pick or two. Not saying that leaves a lot of room for Ridley, Marshall and Greene, but none of them could/should expect a top salary in the circumstances. Dropping Lawson Humphries - are you kidding??
- cats4ever
Apart from if Lawson Humphries were to become a part of the Blakey move, are Freo likely to do anything else this trade period? What's the liklihood of Bobby Hill finding his was there as an SSP? Or being back at another AFL club?
- Luke
Quite a few questions on Nick Blakey and Geelong throughout the day.
The option of trading draft picks to Sydney is just about off the table now after the Rowan Marshall deal.
This is where the Cats will have to offload some quality players.
Would the Swans be interested in Gryan Miers at all? He'd be a valuable player up forward alongside Charlie Curnow.
Could they be enticed by adding someone like Lawson Humphries or Sam De Koning in their backline?
Humphries isn't quite a like-for-like replacement for Blakey, but he is one of the best ball-users off halfback in the league.

Are the masses sleeping on the Magpies?
Much to my distress I have to say Collingwood seem to be flying under the radar a little. They’ve strengthened their goal to goal attack and side to side options . Might be a Pies year heaven help us .
- Phillip
I agree, Phillip.
It wouldn't surprise me at all to see the Pies rocket back up the ladder next season.
Lachie Neale and Jesse Hogan will both be really big additions, if healthy, and speaking of health, the Pies will hope to get a clean bill when it comes to Darcy Moore.
I'd say it is definitely top six or bust for the Pies in 2027, and if things break right, they could make the top four.

What are the Blues up to?
Are Carlton chasing anyone else this trade period? Or is it just Whitfield at this stage? Cheers!
- Andre
gday mate just wondering when will carlton get Lachie Whitfield
- Charlie
Hello again, any progress with the Trade requests from Hudson O’Keeffe and Flynn Riley, as if one of both go, does that change the baggers piority for a ruckman, in the draft or even going for a ruckman in the trade
- MG
Any news on the Blues' front please? With their finish to 2026, I would have thought they'd be a pretty attractive destination?
- Sean5
What will it take to get the Whitfield deal done and do we expect it to go down to the wire? Is there anyone else on the radar for the blues? Any other big names that they are looking for? Ruck wise since we're losing a couple of big men? Cheers!
- John
Plenty of interest in what the Blues are up to, so I'm going to answer all of you at once.
In terms of trades, I believe it is only Lachie Whitfield that the Blues are interested in, in terms of incomings.
Carlton's main priority during this trade period is still trying to get ahead of a Cody Walker bid, which looks like it'll come from Richmond.
I can't see them parting ways with any of their early picks because that'll mean they're essentially punting on Walker.
The noise thus far is that the Giants want a pick in the 20s for Whitfield and Carlton currently holds picks 11, 16, 23 and 24 to start the draft.
You'd think the ones in the 20s might get that done.

Gold Coast is interested in another young Hawk
Gold Coast is keen on adding Hawks youngster Sam Butler. (Getty Images)It seems like Gold Coast and Hawthorn are going to have plenty to do with each other this trade period.
Having got the attention of Aidan Schubert, Tom Morris reports the Suns are now keen on Schubert's Hawks teammate Sam Butler.
Butler, 23, played eight games at AFL level this season, and is contracted through 2027.
It'll be interesting to see whether the Suns and Hawks work to combine the two players in one deal, or whether they are separate transactions.
