State Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson, on Wednesday (August 5, 2026), presented the maiden Budget of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led coalition government in Tamil Nadu. In his Budget speech lasting 2 hours and 30 minutes, he announced the provision of an eight-gram (one-sovereign) gold coin and a silk saree to brides under the ‘Annan Seer Thittam’ and the allocation of ₹560 crore for the ‘Thai Maaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam’, under which newborn babies delivered in government hospitals will be gifted a one-gram gold ring.

Other announcements included the setting up of maternity care and support centres called ‘Thai Care’ across the State for pregnant women; the establishment of ‘Aran’ shelter homes in five districts to provide safe accommodation, food, counselling, and rehabilitation support to transgender persons facing social and familial challenges; and the creation of new mangrove forests in Cuddalore, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, and Kanniyakumari, under the TN-SHORE scheme.

    ‘Nambikkai Illam’ in five districts for children with intellectual disabilities

    Government institutions for persons with intellectual disabilities under the name ‘Nambikkai Illam’, will be established in Thanjavur, Tiruvannamalai, Salem, Cuddalore and Virudhunagar districts. These institutions will provide special education, early intervention services, rehabilitation and vocational training to children aged three years and above. In the initial stage, each institution will function as a day school with 50 students, later being upgraded to include residential facilities.     Heightened expectations for Vijay-led TVK government's maiden Budget

    Amid heightened expectations, the maiden Budget of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led coalition government in Tamil Nadu headed by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay will be presented in the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday (August 5, 2026). Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson will present the State Budget for 2026-27 at 10 a.m. in the Assembly.

    The Budget assumes added significance as the TVK had made several promises on the welfare front ahead of the 2026 Assembly election and is now expected to outline its roadmap for fulfilling them. Many of the party’s poll promises require substantial financial resources for their implementation.
