The warning from the global scientific community is clearer than ever: Earth has lost its ability to regenerate resources at the pace we demand them. This is not a projection for the distant future; according to experts in ecology and global resources, the planet cannot sustain even the current population under existing production models.

The Boundaries We Have Crossed

The concept of “Planetary Boundaries,” developed by the Stockholm Resilience Centre, identifies nine essential processes for the stability of life. As of today, we have surpassed six of them, including biodiversity integrity and the freshwater cycle.

This exhaustion manifests in three critical pillars:

 1. Biological Deficit: We currently consume the equivalent of 1.75 planets every year. We are depleting our “natural capital”—such as fertile soils and aquifers—rather than living off the biological interest nature generates.

 2. Threatened Food Security: Soil degradation and climate change are reducing agricultural productivity just as global demand hits historic highs.

 3. Consumption Inequality: The problem lies not only in the number of people but in the ecological footprint. If everyone lived like those in the most industrialized nations, the resource crisis would have accelerated decades ago.

Overpopulation or Mismanagement?

While the global population continues its march toward 10 billion, scientists agree that technology and efficiency could mitigate the impact. However, the current “take-make-waste” system is physically incompatible with a planet of finite resources.

The Path Toward Regeneration

To reverse this trend, science proposes a paradigm shift toward a circular economy and regenerative agriculture. It is no longer enough to simply reduce damage; the new goal must be to actively restore ecosystems so they can become productive and resilient once again.
