It’s been confirmed that Lionsgate has changed the release of Mel Gibson’s The Resurrection of Christ two-parter, originally slated for March 2027 releases with 40 days between Part One and Part Two. They have also released a first look image.

These are the follow-ups to The Passion of Christ from 20o4, also directed by Gibson, narrating the arrest, trial and crucifixion of Jesus Christ at the hands of Caiaphas and the Pharisees (an anti-Jewish take on the tale). The original film takes from the ‘canon’ Gospels and Anne Catherine Emmerich’s visions.

Gibson and Bruce Davey, a film producer for Icon Productions, have confirmed that principal photography for the first sequel has been completed.

The Resurrection of Christ will star Jaakko Ohtonen, Mariela Garriga, Pier Luigi Pasino, Kasia Smutniak, Riccardo Scamarcio and Rupert Everett. The script has been a collaborative project between Gibson and Randall Wallace, with Donal Gibson assisting with the story, charting the aftermath of Christ’s crucifixion in which he is resurrected and the events surrounding it. Both films have a budget of $100 million.

The 2004 film starred Jim Caviezel as Christ, with Maia Morgenstern playing his mother Mary and Monica Bellucci as Mary Magdalene. It grossed $612.1 million worldwide from its $30 million budget (the highest-grossing Christian film and the highest-grossing independent of all time), yet faced polarising reviews due to its amplified performances and direction standing as positives, while its anti-Jewish take and graphically violent presentation were deemed as controversial setbacks. The Passion of Chris earned three Oscar nominations at the 77th Academy Awards: Best Makeup, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Score, losing to A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Aviator and Finding Neverland, respectively.

The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One debuts May 6th 2027, while Part Two arrives on May 25th 2028.
