Hazelnuts in shell

In 2025, exports of hazelnuts were worth a total US$2.7 billion.

Exports of hazelnuts increased in sales by an overall average 12.6% from 5 years earlier in 2021 when export sales for hazelnuts were $2.4 billion.

From 2024 to 2025, worldwide export revenues for the toasty and earthy tasting seed grew by 5.4% starting from $2.56 billion.

Alternately called cobnuts or filberts, hazelnuts seeds come from the fruits of hazel trees.

Hazelnuts are used to make candy pralines, chocolate truffles and hazelnut paste products including tortes, cakes and other sweet desserts. Hazelnuts are also key ingredients of flavoring ingredients, pastes and powders.

By value, the 5 biggest exporters of hazelnuts (Türkiye, Chile, United States of America, Italy and Azerbaijan) sold 83.3% of all hazelnuts exported during 2025.

Applying a continental perspective, countries in Asia supplied the highest dollar worth of exported hazelnuts during 2025 with shipments valued at $1.41 billion or 52.2% of the global total. In second place were exporters located in Europe (19.3%) trailed by those in suppliers in Latin America (18.7%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, North America (9.6%), Africa (0.06%) then Oceania (0.014%) led by Australia and New Zealand.

Shifting our focus to imports, the 5 leading importers of hazelnuts in 2025 were buyers in Germany, Italy, France, Canada and Poland. Combined, that quintet of top import countries bought over two-thirds (71.7%) of globally imported hazelnuts as measured by dollar value.

The above percentages suggest the 67 exporters of hazelnuts (83.3% for the corresponding top 5 exporters) is a more concentrated cohort compared to 152 buying countries, islands and territories. As specified in the previous paragraph, the top 5 importers accounted for a smaller portion of its world total for imported hazelnuts at 71.7%.

As for global imports of hazelnuts by continent, 79.4% of hazelnuts purchased on international markets was delivered to customers in Europe ahead of importers in Asia (6.9%), North America (6.2%), Latin America (3.4%) excluding Mexico but including the Caribbean, Africa (3%) and Oceania (1.1%) led by Australia and New Zealand.

We calculated the average unit price collected by exporters of hazelnuts still in their shells to be $4,782 per ton in 2025. That dollar amount reflects a 33.9% inflation rate compared to the average tonnage rate of $3,572 for 2024.

Exports of shelled hazelnuts demanded a higher unit price. For shelled hazelnuts, the average unit price received by exporters was $9,861 per ton in 2025 inflating by 18.9% from the average tonnage rate of $8,295 for 2024. The higher average price results in part from shelling labor costs and other processing expenses.

For research purposes, the 6-digit Harmonized Tariff System code prefix is 080221 for fresh or dried hazelnuts in shell, and 080222 for fresh or dried shelled hazelnuts.

Drilling down on those categories, 91.7% of hazelnuts exported worldwide by value were for shelled hazelnuts down from 94.1% for 2024. The remaining 8.3% in 2025 was paid for hazelnuts still in their shells compared to 5.9% in the prior year.

By value, the listed 20 countries shipped 99.1% of globally exported hazelnuts in 2025.

Among the top exporters, the fastest-growing hazelnuts exporters since 2024 were: mainland China (up 421.8%), Croatia (up 251.5%), Chile (up 113.1%) and Poland (up 94.5%).

The pair of listed countries that posted declines in their exported hazelnuts sales were Türkiye (down -29.3% from 2024) and France (down -11.1%).

Overall spending on imported hazelnuts was US$2.6 billion for 2025. That dollar amount results from a 17.4% increase over the 5-year period starting in 2021 and accelerated by 15.7% year over year compared to 2024.

Below are the 20 best buying markets as measured by the highest dollar value worth of hazelnuts imported during 2025, for any hazelnuts regardless of whether shelled or not.

By value, the listed 20 countries bought 97.1% of globally imported hazelnuts in 2025.

Among the top importers, the fastest-growing hazelnuts importers since 2024 were: Syria (up 510.7%), Poland (up 161.5%), Türkiye (up 81.4%) and mainland China (up 32.2%).

Those countries that posted declines in their imported hazelnuts purchases were: Algeria (down -12.3% from 2024), Russia (down -4.8%), Canada (down -4%) and the United Kingdom (also down -4%).

In 2025, the world’s average unit price for exports of in-shell hazelnuts was US$4,782 per ton.

The average tonnage charge for the number one exporter of unshelled hazelnuts, Chile at $4,269, was lower than the global average.

Ranked in ascending order, listed below are the countries collecting the lowest average unit prices for exports of in-shell hazelnuts in 2025.

Reductions in average unit price paid per ton for in-shell hazelnuts from 2024 to 2025 belonged to low-cost exporters in Australia (down -72.2%), Iran (down -46.4%) and Hong Kong (down -36.8%).

The following countries reaped the highest average unit prices for exported in-shell hazelnuts.

In 2025, the world’s average unit price for exports of shelled hazelnuts was US$9,861 per ton.

The average tonnage charge for the leading exporter of shelled hazelnuts by sales revenue, Türkiye, was lower at $9,437.

Ranked in ascending order, listed below are the countries charging the lowest average unit prices for exported hazelnuts in 2025 that that have already had their shells removed.

Double-digit percentage reductions in average unit price garnered per ton for shelled hazelnuts from 2024 to 2025 belong to low-cost exporters in Malaysia (down -79.2%), Iran (down -78.8%), Indonesia (down -53%), Norway (down -23.9%) and Saudi Arabia (down -16.1%).

The following countries received the highest average unit prices for exported hazelnuts with their shells removed .

The greatest increases in terms of higher average unit prices collected in 2025 compared to 2024 were recorded by exporters of shelled hazelnuts in Hong Kong (up 60%), Australia (also up 60%), Poland (up 58.8%), Greece (up 47.9%) and Portugal (up 47.2%).
