The body of a young man was recovered from the River Lee in the centre of Cork city at low tide yesterday morning

The body of a young man has been pulled from a river in the city-center of Cork, in Ireland.

The man’s body was discovered in the River Lee in the centre of Cork city at low tide yesterday morning.

It's believed he had gone into the river sometime in the early hours of Sunday, Cork Beo reports.

The tragic discovery led to a recovery operation involving the Gardai and Cork City Fire Brigade. The operation was in a difficult spot, close by the Mary Elmes Bridge on Merchant's Quay, just opposite the main bus station.

The body of the young man, in his mid-20s, was recovered from the water. Gardai put up a small forensics tent at the scene as the body was lifted onto the quay and an initial examination carried out. It's understood his family has been informed, and the incident is being regarded as a tragic event.

"A Garda spokesperson told CorkBeo: Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of an incident where a body was found in the river in Cork city on Sunday 24th May 2026 at approximately 8 am.

A male in his 20s was pronounced deceased at the scene. His body has since been removed from the scene for a post-mortem examination."

The post-mortem at CUH will determine the cause of death.
