The first Budget under the newly elected Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government in Tamil Nadu will focus on the prudent utilisation of public funds. The government is assessing the State’s financial position across departments before finalising its spending priorities, according to Minister for Energy Resources and Law CTR Nirmal Kumar.
“This is the first Budget of the new government. You know what the financial status is. All the departments are bleeding financially. We need to ensure that budgets and revenues are utilised properly for the people,” he told businessline after the Cabinet meeting, the second since the TVK government assumed office two months ago.
Kumar said Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay had, over the past few days, held detailed discussions with all departments and urged ministers to ensure that public funds were spent efficiently and that the Budget remained focused on the welfare of the people.
He said the Cabinet meeting reviewed the State’s financial position ahead of the presentation of the Budget, he said, “We cannot disclose what was discussed,” he added.
When asked for an update on the proposed Parandur greenfield airport project, the Minister said, “It has already been told. We will confirm soon,” without elaborating further.
The Tamil Nadu Assembly is expected to convene for the Budget session towards the end of July or first week of August. The session is likely to continue for about a month.
