A Delhi court sent two law students from Uttar Pradesh to 14-day judicial custody on Wednesday (July 15, 2026), in a case where they were charged with allegedly swearing during a Supreme Court hearing and assaulting security staff. The two spent two-days in police custody before this ruling.

Delhi Police announced the arrest of Prabal Pratap Singh (24) and Chander Bhan (23) after a case was registered against them for disrupting court proceedings and using objectionable language inside a courtroom at the Supreme Court of India.

According to the police, the incident took place on July 10, inside Court Room No. 13 of the Supreme Court of India during a hearing involving Prabal Pratap Singh & Another Vs State of U.P. (through Commissioner), in which Mr. Singh appealed for registration of an FIR against a police officer. “According to the statement by Supreme Court security staff, Prabal started using objectionable language during the hearing. He also threw papers inside the courtroom and disturbed the atmosphere, disrupting the court proceedings,” a senior police official said.

An FIR was earlier registered against them under Sections 132 (assault against a public servant), 221 (voluntarily obstructing a public servant) and 224 (threatening a public servant) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Creating disorder

According to the FIR, “During the judicial proceedings, accused Prabal Pratap, while appearing as a Petitioner-in-Person, intentionally disrupted the court proceedings by using abusive and unparliamentary language, throwing papers inside the courtroom and creating disorder.”

The FIR further alleged, “When staff attempted to maintain decorum and restrain him, the accused used force on the complainant, thereby obstructing him in the discharge of his official duties.”

Following their arrest, both were taken to the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS) for medical examination, where doctors found that neither required any immediate active psychiatric intervention.

Prabal Pratap had approached the Supreme Court after the Allahabad High Court declined to direct the registration of an FIR against the ACP of Vikas Nagar, Lucknow. The High Court had then directed him to pursue the matter as a private complaint.

Appearing as a petitioner-in-person on July 10, Prabal called the Justices K.V. Viswanathan and Alok Aradhe “judicial servants”. When Justice Vishwanathan questioned his conduct, he appeared to get agitated. He then allegedly hurled abuses and threw papers in the courtroom and had to be escorted out by security personnel. Videos of the incident have surfaced on social media.
