WASHINGTON — Trump administration officials see a potential opening for resuming talks with Iran, an official confirmed to Al-Monitor on Saturday.

The cautious optimism came after 12 consecutive days of US military strikes on Iranian military targets around the Strait of Hormuz. But a four-day lull in Iranian attacks on commercial shipping in the strait was seen as an opportunity to resume diplomatic talks and dial down the war, Al-Monitor’s source said.

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday posted a public threat on social media if Iran continues striking commercial ships in the strait.

“From this point forward, any time the Islamic Republic of Iran shoots at a ship in the Strait of Hormuz, whether it be by Missile, Rocket, Drone, or any other device or weapon, the United States will bomb and destroy ONE BRIDGE OR POWER PLANT, including those located next to, or in, the Capital City of Tehran,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

The circumstances surrounding the potential dialogue with Tehran were not immediately clear. A White House spokesperson did not immediately respond to Al-Monitor’s request for comment.
