Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president C. Joseph Vijay, is on a visit to Karur on Friday (July 10, 2026)) for the first time after the September 27 stampede last year that claimed the lives of 41 persons during his party roadshow. This is also his first official visit to the town after he took up the reins as Chief Minister in May.

Speaking at Atlas Kalaiarangam in Karur, Mr. Vijay who stated that the stampede was a deep scar in his life, announced a memorial for the victims of the 2025 stampede on behalf of TVK. Criticising the DMK, he termed the Dravidian party the “vending machine” of corruption.

Later in the day, he will hand over appointment orders to the members of 32 families affected by the tragic stampede as the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court, on Friday, has refused to grant a stay on the State government’s move, following a plea challenging the decision.

    Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay will be meeting the family members of the victims who died in the tragic stampede at a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party rally addressed by him on September 27 last year.

    Security tightened as CM Vijay visits Karur

    Security has been tightened to ensure the smooth conduct of the programmes.

    Led by T.S. Anbu, Additional Director General of Police, about 5000 policemen drawn from different parts of the State have been deployed for security.

    To prevent overcrowding, access to the primary meeting venues has been strictly regulated through designated entry-exit buffer zones.

    A senior police officer said that security arrangements have been made to oversee crowd management, traffic regulation, venue security and emergency response preparedness.

    Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam workers have erected banners in different parts of the city as a mark of welcoming their leader. 

    Huge ‘pandals’ have been erected at Atlas Kalaiarangam, the main venue, where the Chief Minister is expected to address a massive public gathering. Passes with digital QR codes have been issued to about 5000 cadres. They have begun to assemble.

    Karur prepared to welcome CM Vijay

    Karur, the textile town, has geared up to receive Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, who is making his maiden official visit since he assumed office. More importantly, it marks his first visit since the devastating stampede that claimed 41 lives during the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam pre-election campaign rally addressed by him. 

    Mr. Vijay will hand over appointment orders to family members of the 32 victims of the stampede. He will meet the relatives of the victims and the survivors, who were injured in the stampede. They have been brought to the Collector’s Office, where he will meet them.
