The young fast bowler clocked 141kph before forcing an edge that was safely collected by wicketkeeper Sanju Samson, giving India a crucial breakthrough after New Zealand’s openers had made an explosive start.
The five-match T20I series began with India winning the toss and opting to bowl first. However, the hosts wasted little time putting the Indian bowling attack under pressure, with Finn Allen and Seifert building a rapid opening partnership before Mayank intervened.
Mayank Yadav produces a 141kph delivery to dismiss Tim Seifert
The dismissal arrived on the final ball of the fifth over when Mayank bowled a short-of-a-good-length delivery at 141kph, pitching it wide outside the off stump. Seifert attempted to attack the ball, positioning himself to target the covers while staying leg-side. However, his aggressive shot selection proved costly as he failed to make the intended contact and produced an audible outside edge.
Samson remained alert behind the stumps and completed a straightforward catch to send the New Zealand opener back to the pavilion. Mayank immediately celebrated the breakthrough with visible intensity, reflecting the importance of ending the hosts’ early momentum.

Seifert departed after scoring 24 runs off 17 deliveries, an innings that had helped New Zealand establish a brisk scoring rate during the powerplay. The wicket also highlighted Mayank’s ability to combine pace with attacking intent. His raw speed put Seifert under pressure, and the batter’s attempt to force the scoring ultimately resulted in India’s first breakthrough.
New Zealand openers put Indian bowlers under pressure
Before Seifert’s dismissal, New Zealand had enjoyed an encouraging start at Hagley Oval. Allen and Seifert attacked the Indian bowlers from the beginning, racing beyond the 40-run mark in their opening partnership within the first few overs. Their positive approach ensured that India had little room for error during the initial stages of the innings. The hosts looked determined to take advantage of the powerplay, forcing the Indian seamers to work hard for control.
India’s decision to bowl first meant that the visitors needed early wickets to prevent New Zealand from building a substantial total. Mayank’s breakthrough provided the team with an important opening to regain control after an expensive start.

While Mayank managed to break through, India’s other opening bowlers endured a difficult beginning. Bhuvneshwar Kumar conceded 21 runs in his first two overs, while Arshdeep Singh gave away 25 runs across his opening two overs. The early scoring put additional pressure on India’s bowling unit, particularly as expectations remained high from Bhuvneshwar’s experience and ability to deliver with the new ball.
With the innings still unfolding, India will look for greater control in the remaining overs and hope to build on Mayank’s breakthrough. New Zealand, meanwhile, will aim to maintain its attacking approach despite losing Seifert.
Mayank’s 141kph thunderbolt has given India an important wicket, but the visitors will need further breakthroughs to prevent the hosts from turning their promising start into a commanding total.
