Bangladesh scripted history on Tuesday after securing their first-ever Test victory over Pakistan on home soil, defeating the visitors by 104 runs in the opening Test at Dhaka. The dramatic Day 5 triumph not only marked a landmark moment for Bangladesh cricket but also triggered significant changes in the updated ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 standings.

Chasing 268 in the fourth innings, Pakistan were bowled out for 163 after Bangladesh’s young pace sensation Nahid Rana produced a sensational spell to seal the contest. The victory handed Bangladesh their maiden win of the current WTC cycle and dramatically improved their standing on the points table.

Bangladesh’s historic victory over Pakistan in Dhaka Test

After being asked to bat first, Bangladesh laid the foundation for victory with an impressive first-innings total of 413. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto led from the front with a superb century, while Mominul Haque and Mushfiqur Rahim chipped in with crucial half-centuries. Pakistan responded strongly with 386 in reply, thanks largely to a century from opener Azan Awais. However, Bangladesh all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz kept the hosts in control with a brilliant five-wicket haul.

The match swung decisively in Bangladesh’s favour during the second innings. Shanto once again delivered under pressure with a composed 87, helping Bangladesh post 240/9 declared and set Pakistan a target of 268. Pakistan appeared steady at 119/3 during the chase, but Nahid turned the game completely around with a fiery spell of 5/40. The 23-year-old pacer ripped through the middle and lower order as Bangladesh completed a memorable 104-run victory late on Day 5.

Bangladesh rise in WTC 2025-27 standings after first win

The result caused a major reshuffle in the World Test Championship standings. Bangladesh climbed from eighth to sixth place after recording its first victory of the cycle. Their percentage of points won (PCT) jumped significantly from 16.67 to 44.44. Pakistan, meanwhile, slipped from fifth to seventh place following their second defeat in three matches. Their PCT dropped sharply from 50.00 to 33.33, despite their points tally remaining unchanged at 12.

India benefited from Pakistan’s fall and moved up to fifth position without playing a match. England also dropped down the table despite no change in their overall record. At the top, Australia continue to dominate the standings after their strong Ashes campaign, while New Zealand and South Africa remain comfortably placed inside the top three. Sri Lanka continues to occupy fourth position with an impressive PCT of 66.67.
