Tavius Jean-Charles has been jailed for five years after Southwark Crown Court heard he unleashed tirades of religiously aggravated abuse at members of the Jewish community

A yob who threatened to "blow up" Jewish schools hours after he shouted "I will kill you Jews" has been jailed.

Tavius Jean-Charles, 36, subjected six victims to repeated threats over several months, with the incidents taking place near synagogues. A court heard Charles directed his threats towards individuals he believed to be Jewish, including shouting death threats and calling for Jewish schools to be blown up.

One victim became "alarmed and concerned" after Charles said to him: "It would be good if we blew up one of their schools," referring to several Jewish schools in Stoke Newington, north London. This led to Charles arrest, after which it transpired he had shouted "I will kill you Jews" just the previous day.

And Charles was caged for five years at Southwark Crown Court last week, a sentence which the Metropolitan Police says shows its commitment to tackling hate crime. It comes just weeks after two Jewish men were stabbed in Golders Green, north London.

Speaking after Charles' sentencing, Detective Chief Superintendent Brittany Clarke, who leads policing in the area, said: "Jean-Charles told detectives when he was interviewed that he didn’t have any negative feelings towards Jewish people. The evidence shows otherwise and I’m pleased my officers, working with our partners, have been able to bring him to justice.

"There is no place for hate in the capital. I hope this case demonstrates to the Jewish community in London how seriously we take antisemitic hate crimes."

Met Police's counter-terrorism detectives are leading 11 investigations into attacks on the Jewish and Iranian communities, including the terror attack that saw two Jewish men being stabbed in Golders Green in April. Detectives have made a total of 35 arrests in connection with those investigations and 10 people have been charged.

Charles' offences happened between October 2025 and March 2026 near synagogues. Last month, the yob, from Hackney, east London, admitted seven racially-aggravated public order offences and one count of racially-aggravated criminal damage. When he was sentenced, Charles was given an indefinite restraining order preventing him from contacting his victims or entering the Stamford Hill area.
