After WhatsApp, Centre sends notices to Telegram, Signal

NEW DELHI: A day after directing Meta to pause WhatsApp's proposed username feature, govt has issued similar notices to Telegram and Signal over their existing username systems, asking them to explain how they prevent fraud and impersonation. The IT ministry wants detailed responses on safeguards against scams, phishing, digital arrest frauds and identity impersonation. Like WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal have been given three days to respond, sources said.In Telegram's case, govt has also asked why the platform should be allowed to continue offering the username feature. The notices come a day after the Centre wrote to Meta, expressing concern that WhatsApp's proposed username feature could increase cybercrime by making it easier for bad actors to contact users without sharing phone numbers.

It also asked Meta to put the rollout on hold until consultations are completed.Officials said the IT ministry has sought details on how Telegram and Signal verify users, tackle impersonation and prevent abuse through usernames. Telegram has been under govt scrutiny in recent weeks. Last month, India temporarily blocked its web services over leaked and fake NEET papers. Its message editing feature was banned till June 30.
