Former gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed's son dies in car crash in UP's Jhansi

NEW DELHI: Deceased gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed’s son Abaan was killed on Thursday after his speeding car collided with a divider in Jhansi.His friend Sonu also died in the accident, Jhansi SSP BBGTS Murthy confirmed.

According to police, all five occupants were travelling in a Hyundai Creta from Prayagraj towards Jhansi when the vehicle crashed.According to news agency PTI, Murthy said police received information around 10.30 am that an SUV had crashed into a road divider after the driver lost control. Three others were injured and taken to a medical college for treatment.The accident occurred on the Kanpur-Jhansi road in Poonch, superintendent of police (rural) Arvind Kumar said.Murthy said a preliminary inquiry also suggested that the SUV was travelling at high speed. "One of the injured passengers told us that the vehicle was moving at a very high speed and became uncontrollable before crashing into the divider," he said.Aban was the youngest of Atiq Ahmad’s five sons and the twin brother of Ahjam. His elder brothers Umar and Ali are currently lodged in separate jails in Uttar Pradesh.The accident comes against the backdrop of a series of violent incidents involving members of Atiq Ahmed’s family, including the deaths of his son Asad Ahmed, brother Ashraf and Atiq himself.

Asad killed in UP STF encounter

On April 13, 2023, Atiq Ahmed’s 19-year-old son Asad Ahmed and his alleged associate Ghulam were killed in an encounter with the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) near Jhansi.Both Asad and Ghulam carried a reward of Rs 5 lakh each. They were wanted in connection with the murder of lawyer Umesh Pal, a key witness in the 2005 murder of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Raju Pal.Umesh Pal and his two police security guards were shot dead outside his home in Prayagraj’s Dhoomanganj area on February 24, 2023.The suspects in the case included Asad and four others, Armaan, Ghulam, Guddu Muslim and Sabir. Asad was named in the Umesh Pal murder case, while Ghulam had eight cases against him, according to police.The encounter took place almost two months after the daylight killing of Umesh Pal.

Atiq, Ashraf shot dead days later

Two days after Asad’s death, Atiq Ahmed and his brother Khalid Azim alias Ashraf were shot dead in Prayagraj on April 15, 2023.The brothers were being taken for a medical examination when three attackers posing as mediapersons opened fire at close range.

The assailants were caught by police at the spot and subsequently arrested.The attackers had reportedly brought an old camera and approached Atiq and Ashraf under the pretext of asking them questions.Atiq and Ashraf were being escorted by police when the shooting took place inside the premises of a hospital under the Shahganj police station area.
